So I sat in 4 hours of 4th of july friday afternoon rush hour traffic to make it to Dominion Raceway's grand opening of the drift & grip series. The track did a pro am event last year but hasn't really done any drifting. I decided to go out to support. The facility is a road course, 1/8 mile drag (90 finished), and a banked oval. We did the infield on the oval.
The track surface itself was pretty nice. The only down side was that they had painted out the go kart section with yellow lines (see in video) but they put down slick surfacing material to keep their speeds low. So I'd be hauling butt through a manji section, then have to slow down to like 10mph to not spin. Then you'd be in and out of that surface the rest of the track. I think it did well to entice the track to do more drift days. The event sold out so much that they took registration space from the grip section to add to the drift. It was originally 30/30, but then they made it 40/20. Even then, the drift section sold out and was on a pretty long wait list.
I'll do better (daylight) video later but here's one of my night runs. Listen for the sound of my tires hitting the go kart section.

Best I got. It was raining. Guy in front of me spun. The left side of his front bumper (apparently E36s are fracking steel) hooked into the lip of my drift rim (not pictured) and it pulled the stud and locating plate slightly from the body.
Car now has probably just shy of an inch toe in on the driver's side and hella toe out on the passenger's. I still haven't torn down the rear but cursory glance shows nothing wrong with the trailing arm and subframe. It's all in that subframe to frame locating stud. I don't feel confident on pulling it out right. Plus, somehow the driver's side floor popped into the car an inch or so. Car's been in about 5 crashes in its life. 2 before me, 3 during.
I've had the car 13 or 14 years now. Probably time to let it go. It could be fixed. But I don't consider it worth it.
