Dropped in on mechanic today.
Works progressing pre track day.
1. All gauges now working. Oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, volt.
2. Brake master cylinder oil leak fixed. So no brake fluid dripping onto brake peddle.
3. All wheel bearings replaced.
4. New triple weber air stacks going in. Out with 45mm. In with 125mm with 65mm tapper.
5. Rear door cards in. Now to be painted.
6. Rear wing and hoop strap under way. hopefully just 1 week out.
Rear door cards. Will paint a matt black.

Rear wing coming together. Issues with duck tail being too short. When we cut we lose the curve so will fiberglass the rear vertical to hide.
20150915_080657_zpsza63jmno.jpg
Car will look far better with tail and hoop strap. Will just spray can boot lid and tail for now. Want to track her for a while and can detail her up in a year or two. Been too long off of the track. Want some fun!

Boot lid now ready for rear wing to go on. Rear wing also ready and should bolt on quickly today.
The issue was that the rear duck tail, the tail you see now fibreglassed to the boot lid, was to short. As it was curved, in lengthening the duck tail to go from edge to edge of boot lid (okay, trunk, but it's not a fricking elephant!) we ended up with a straight section and it looked bad. So boot lid off to the fibreglasser to do wonders, as they do, compared to us schmucks.
Boot lid back and off to the painter today. All together tomorrow. Here's hoping.

Okay. Boot (trunk) lid ready but sent back to touch up some runny paintwork. It's a cheap job anyway. The rest of the car looks like it has been painted by hand at home with a brush, but still, I'm paying for it so let's get this bit right.
The boot as it looks now. You can see the holes for the holding down bolts that will secure the rear wing.

Yeah the rear right corner has had a knock but it is a race car. In a few years I'll get a good paint job on it.
A close up of the issue.
w1_zpsl0r0yvuk.jpg
Here you can see where the paint has run. Currently fixing this now. And you can see the rear right corner knock.
w3_zpsfhzmi6uq.jpg
And finally. The rear wing. Painted and ready to install. The rear hoop strap will need to wait a month or two. I want to track it and the fibreglass guy is a little busy.

A Few updates.
The paint over the fibreglass wing kit is bubbling and splitting. Research shows that it is the release agent used by the original fibreglasser (kit is from the Coupe Guy in the US) and that effectively, it is bleeding, weeping. We've had it repainted twice and now undergoing a third attempt.
I've told the painter to make one last attempt and stop, as in a year or two I'll get the whole car painted and hopefully it's has finished bleeding by then.
1st Shot, oil temp and pressure sensors attached, see immediately adjacent to oil cooler radiator.

2nd Shot, safety springs now on triple webers as per racing req's.

4th Shot, all racing gauges now hooked up and working. A must to have oil temp and pressure gauges working when racing.

5th Shot, Rear door cards in. Might leave them bare aluminium. Was going to paint a semi matt black. Passenger seat 4 point harness in for race rides.

Not to be that guy but isn't that an E9?
Nope. An E3 converted into an E9 in the 70's (we think) to compete in hillclimbs. The only way you can tell is the bonnet, it goes over the nose. The E9 has a body strip in front of the bonnet about 4 inches wide.
It's 60mm shorter than an E9, better weight distribution and lighter than an E9 CSL.

Went racing.
Times are here: http://racing.natsoft.com.au/6369796...0.87X/Result?1 if this does not work, go here; http://racing.natsoft.com.au/results/#2 . I'm car 77 and in Class 'C'.
New Tyres, car only back after 3 years off of the track. The setup for the day was 3 morning practice sessions then 3 afternoon super sprint sessions.
Given the lack of track time my car had and a new short tight track I'd never driven before, the first two sessions I relaxed and bedded in the tyres. To be fair I almost did not need to brake at corners using the gearing to slow me down. Relaxed!
Session 3 (the last of the practice sessions, each about 7 laps long so not a lot of track time) I decided to push a little harder. Started braking a little deeper and I also started to get a rhythm for corner and gear/gear change. 40 year old dogleg boxes are not fast to push through and it takes a few laps to get right or you are at or through the corner before you can change gears (so left in neutral!). Bear in mind 2 laps into session 3 when I pushed a little harder I was only into this track for 16 laps.
Lap 2 was to be my last. Huge steam cloud billowed out on the back of lap 3 as the head gasket let go. Luckily, 2 corners before pit lane. It's not the gasket. I had a MLS gasket so it must be the build. I'll let all know!
So I missed all timed/push hard sessions. Luckily the track was timing all sessions as they were testing new equipment.
The car felt great before it let go. Heaps of torque. If I was a gear too low in the corner it powered out. From past experience and knowing where I was at building pace and learning corners/braking points I think at the end of the day I would be 2 to 3 seconds faster than my 1st hot practice lap.
I did a 1.08.152. I think I can take that to a 1.05. Class 'C' was won by two race 130i's at 1.04.93. So I think I am heading in the right direction.
So what did I learn from all of this?
1. The last mechanic turned out to be unqualified, un-insured and incompetent. The engine he built blew a head gasket before after 60 laps. It blew again after 17. Honestly, I'm not surprised. Time to do it right!
2. I've got a new mechanic. An E30 S14 specialist. Qualified and insured.
3. Car was towed to new mechanic's shop Saturday afternoon.
4. We'll rebuild the engine. Better now as we can test the two heads and cams I've got and pick the best setup.
5. My springs are too stiff. In tight corners I bounced so not enough play. I'll talk to a specialist and reduce my spring stiffness. I think I can get a second here as I’m off of the throttle because of the bounce!
6. My middle weber float cover popped off!!!! Will always carry a spare. I heard it go!!
7. Car should be a great performer. Whether I improve 1, 2 or 3 seconds it was a hoot!!! Sounded great and pulled like a train!
8. Lot's to do to improve the car. Take out some weight. Springs, engine rebuild, and lots of practice. I'll be faster when the car and I really know each other.
So 6th out of my group and timed from 2 laps into my third practice. Car 67 immediately above me was running slicks (I had road legal track day tyres). Cam Blazer (love his 635, immaculate and he drove like a champion. Thanks’ for the help on the day Cam, greatly appreciated) ran similar tyres and was great fun/help. Car 2 I have no idea what rubber he was running and I think (but not positive) that the two 130i's were on track rubber and not slicks. They went like spanked cats!
Next race day, track afternoon August 22. Same location but different track, something longer!

Okay, forensic inspection of the engine shows this;
1. Wrong pistons.
2. Valve marks not over valve reliefs.
3. So despite the piston heads being fly-cut with valve reliefs for the valves, the valves were hitting the flat. So no clearance what so ever!
4. Of course it blew up! It was a walking time bomb.
5. What type of incompetent idiot of a fake negligent mechanic specifies and buys the wrong pistons and then noting previous valve marks on the piston heads, still neglects to modify pistons and hands the car back to detonate??!
6. all valve heads snapped off.
7. the block was destroyed.
8. Two pistons have holes straight through their heads!!!
9. Valve heads where hammered through valve inlets like a coin being hammered in the hole... sideways!!!!!
10. So, apart from some ancillaries, block and head need to be thrown out.
So what to do now?
a. I have just talked to Pip Barker. Pip built the JPS teams Group A M30 racing engines.
b. Tomorrow I will commission Pip to build my new race engine, properly, like the expert he is.
c. Pip is confident of 330hp plus.
d. The prep can start now as can ordering/designing of parts.
e. Pip is currently finishing an M30 race engine for Jim Richards (JPS 635csi touring car champion) and needs the engine ready for Jim to race his Group A in October.
f. My engine should be ready late November to mid December. Yes the wait is a pain but I want a proven expert/specialist to undertake the works after the history I had with the last guy.
g. I'll send through details as we build and results subject to Pip being happy that no intercultural property is being handed out.
What am I expecting? A brilliantly and professionally prepared race engine with 330hp plus with a complete Group A build bar improved conrods.
Next post, the damage to the old race engine. Look away now if you hate BMW horror stories.

New race engine underway.
1. Original Group A block.
2. Original Group A knife edge crank.
3. 146mm rods. M1 Procar Spec.
4. Original Group C 12v forged pistons.
5. B35 head.
6. Swap out the 45 DCOE's for triple 50DCOE's.
All parts that could be salvaged for the new engine are now with Pip. To be fair, we are talking flywheel, clutch, crank, rocker cover and extractors. Everything else is destroyed.
ETA, Jan to Feb 2017.

Engine build progressing slowly but expertly. Expected completion date late Jan 2017.
1. Head, webers and manifolds off to specialist to build up manifolds to port match with bigger B35 inlets.
2. Webers to be opened up inside. So weld to outside to build up steel then open up inside.
3. Rods and rod bolts in. Pistons on their way. Needed to be bought back from original purchaser as these are original Group C single cam racing pistons.
4. Yet to order very high lift catcam. Will do so shortly.
So slow but steady.
