    E3 Racer

My E3 racer is near finished.

Raced at the Tasman Revival in November.

Runs a balanced and blue printed 330hp M30 race engine at 12:1 compression, 5 speed dogleg, tripple webers, race exhaust and an LSD.

Currently doing springs, shocks and sway bars as these were stock E3 and really let the car down on the track. Qualified 17th and after 3 days had climbed to 6th fastest time.

    It was purchased at auction some 3 years ago. It sat in my garage with a blown engine for all 3 years until we decided to rebuild it 3 months ago. We have;

    1. tossed the old engine (someone had dropped a standard E23 735 engine in it) for a brand new race engine build that is period correct. 330hp, 12:1 compression. Forged pistons. Blueprinted top and bottom end (each of the lightweight forged pistons is within 0.001g of the next!). Balanced bottom end. Lightened race flywheel. Race clutch. Tossed the twin Su's for new tripple webers (45 DCOE)with ported manifolds. Ported performance head.
    2. Front strut brace.
    3. Group A fuel system in the rear including 4 litre surge tank, holly blues, screw on filters and a 72 litre below floor aluminium tank.
    4. Tossed the 4 speed getrag for a 5 speed dogleg getrag box.
    5. LSD
    6. Tossed the old seats for lightweight race seats.
    7. Placed race 6 point belts. Had standard car seatbelts.
    8. Stripped out interior. Yet to finish.
    9. Just finished cutting out rotten exhaust and welding up new race exhaust.
    10. Runs equal length race extractors.
    11. Runs an oil cooler and an alpina B7 sump.
    Currently;

    1. Adjustable race sway bars front and back on order. Currently runs stock E3 sway bars.
    2. 750lb front, 400lb rear race springs on order.
    3. Bilestein sports shocks all around on order.
    4. Camber adjustable kits to go over shocks front and back.
    5. 5 race dials to go in.
    6. Rear door cards to go in.
    7. Finish cleaning and painting interior to go in.
I'll post some photos of the car s currently completed shortly.

12:1 compression pistons. Weigh around 467g. The older 10.24:1 pistons weighed 668g so a good weight saving here.

Replacing twin Su's with 45 DCOE triple Webers.

Setting up linkages to triple webers. I need to modify the water pump as it will not fit on with the (1,2) cylinder Weber in place.

Port matching head to ported manifolds. Took some time.

    Ported manifold.

Group A touring car race fuel setup.

New race/adjustable sway bars front and back, about to go in.

Camber adjusters to go in front and back. Just waiting for bilsteins to turn up from the US.

    Looks nice!

Have done a lot with vintage/historic Porsches ...never modded my 1975 3.0Si 4-door, 4 sp manual. Was a great sedan that I got a lot of mileage and memories from.

    Cheers.

Linkages now on. Placing strut brace to work out where to put the fuel gear.

    Hopefully, webers running this week.

1st engine start up. Obviously some tuning/heat issues to address but the engine is a real lion.

Front spoiler to go on over next two weeks. The specialist weber tuner with the rolling road is not back from Xmas holidays until next week. Monday, I'll book it in for a tune, get it right and race ready (need to swap jets and chokes in and out to get it right then fine tune off of the weber itself). Then it's new video time, a drive by, photo shoot and first 2013 race weekend Feb 23 and 24.

Headers were on it when I got it. Talking to the previous owner (who was incredibly sheepish as nothing was represented as per the autction) he noted that they took 2 weeks to fabricate. They are tuned equal length and you can hear how they sound.

Suspension in. Onto the rolling road this Friday for weber tune and hp/torque confirmation. I replaced the plastic radiator overflow tank with a polished aluminium setup to match the rest of the engine bay. Racing feb 23, 24.

    Photos next week.

Have been admiring the body on this, what's the history on it? Would love some inside shots.

The weber tuner must have an infinite amount of patience! Individual manifolds on soft mounts with threaded linkage rods does not make for a very straight forward tune.

Tune finished. Will post dyno video shortly. The car screams to 7250rpm and between 5000rpm and the 7250rpm we took it to the sound sends chills up and down your body.

So, when it's all said and done it's the power the rear wheels put to the road that we really care about. Converting this to a flywheel hp is always a little tricky. Is it a 25% reduction between flywheel and rear wheels or 30%?

    180kw at the rear wheels. 361nm of torque at the rear wheels. In USA speak that's;

    241hp at the wheels
    266lbft at rear wheels

    At the flywheel?

Approx 335hp and 366lbft of torque.

Completed a few more mods as per the photos below. Strut brace in. Fuel pressure gauge in. Polished aluminium radiator overflow tank in. Adjustable suspension tops in. Gearbox and LSD breathers in. Spoiler patched and fit checked ready to go off to painter.

We aimed for 330hp in the build and depending on a 25% loss to a 30% loss between flywhell and rear rubber we got a worst case 326hp and a best case 349hp. To say we are very pleased is an incredible understatement.

I need to tune the suspension and then race. The interior needs a lot of work. Dials are yet to go in and I'll get them in the coming weeks. Floor is stripped but not sanded nor painted. Dash is neat but not race ready. Brakes are more street than race and need altering. Still runs double boosters. Interior needs door cards, floor sanded and painted. So, nothing on the interior worth seeing yet. The interior will however be treated to the same level of detail as the engine bay and trunk. Trunk still needs some floor work. Something to do between races this and next year.

you know the drill. Sit down, shut up, headphones on full volume, beer in hand, a short video so you can watch it all but run starts rolling at about 55 secs in.

Enjoy and M30 singing to 7250rpm!

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qZgKvnuRsw[/ame]

vid titled 2nd run but it could have been one of the first. Did a few 4500rpm runs before we strapped down the front end so the two vids are well into the morning.

Taken extractors off to get ceramic coated. For $350, no heat problems plus laminar flow has got to be worth it. May even sneak another hp or two (not that that's needed).

I ordered these from USA. Sit under front struts and set the suspension up for better cornering. hopefully arrive this week and installed next week. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E24-E28-...21173632717%26

Spolier will be back from painter this week.

Spolier and suspension finished next week.

Gauges purchased this week and in next week.

    Extractors back in next week.

Go-fast stripe (we all know that adds 10km/h to top speed and takes 0.5 secs of any lap) on next week.

    Door cards on next week.

Then done and ready to race.

So is the rear door just welded into place or is the car sectioned? Just curious

I thought they were minilite but mine are 10 spoke and not 8. unfortunately I have been undable to date to identify my wheels. To be fair we have concerntrated on engine and suspension so wheels have had to wait. As I have only 6, I'm interested and geting at least two more the same if not another 6.
