    She starts and runs. We will complete the run in tonight and then off to the dyno this week.

    Heat shields on. We changed the leads to the old leads to get the leads away from those headers.

    Running.

    A few issues;

    1. Alternator not charging battery. Alternator off for inspection/repair/replacement.
    2. Amp gauge should be a volt gauge and the amp gauge was wired up so that the power kill switch was bypassed and as such even with power off, the car was live.
    3. The video with the car pifffffting is probably the weber on No.5 & 6. The butterfly nut and brass cover shot off when the previous engine detonated. Additionally, the current engine is built for big 50 DCOE's, the webers are de-tuned and de-jetted for the last engine.
    4. Battery not strong enough. Can barely turn the flywheel.

    Hopefully dyno early next week.

    So very close now.

    We'll put all wiring in heat shields and will get small heat shields for the leads. The temp on the extractors got to 387 degrees C. We will fix the heat shields that are just sitting for first start up. We will weld 2 oil overflow outlets into the rocker cover and blank off the plastic one we used for first startup.

    All back together and off to dyno today. Still need to fix oil temp sensor and place in right location and get a better higher amp battery.

    Just had results back from the dyno guy. 347hp at flywheel. 38mm/39mm conical chokes in the 45 DCOE's. Could have gone up to 41mm as engine power lineal to 6800rpm but then dropped off. Redline is 7200rpm.

    Engine had no dips. Loved the 38 chokes and corresponding jets so that's where she stays.

    I called Pip Barker (JPS racing team mechanic) who notes that when the first Group C engines came out from Germany there was one put together and two in parts. The head race engine builder from Germany came out and spent time with Pip dyno'ing the engine in Grice's garage (Grice is a famous and very successful Group C and Group A Australian touring car driver). Apparently when it went on the bench dyno it did not even make 300hp.

    This is the single cam Group C engine. It has the M1 bottom end so can go to 8000rpm. Pip and the BMW Germany engine specialist fiddled with it for two weeks and eventually ended up with 350hp (changed pump settings, timing, everything they could).

    Grice was hoping for 380hp as the M1's were running 475hp with the twin cam head but identical bottom end. The BMW Germany guy said "don't worry about it, wait until it is in the car, it will be a rocket.

    Grice was apparently very sceptical'. After completion of testing Grice stated that it felt like it had 400hp and was delighted with the results.

    Funnily enough, pistons from the Group C spare parts shelf in Grice's garage back in the early 80's are now in my engine.

    The E3 is home. Drove her home on Saturday. Arms still ache. No 90 degree turns on the street.

    She is a handful at low speed. Track testing to come in the following months. Will get some additional vids and photos as well.

    Yep, stopped of at the BP off James Ruse Drive. Then headed home. Not for the road. Hard to turn at corners at low speed. Race tracks tend not to have 30km/h 90 degree corners. Designed for 4000rpm to 72000rpm not 2000rpm. Hot and exhausting. Shall look for a nice trailer in the new year.

    BMW Car Club has a supersprint day this coming July 7. Will take her for a run-in. Give it the old 85% and then look at suspension as she is bouncy through tight chicanes at Sydney Motorsport Park. Luckily we will run the north circuit that removes the tight sections. Previously she would bounce from corner to corner and as such without wheels down, was off the power. Springs too stiff? She only runs performance road springs and bilstein sports shocks. Springs are very stiff though.

    I've got the dorian timer to place in and need to charge up the gopro. Otherwise, hoping for a dry track as she is very slippery in the wet.

    Race Successful. Raced in Class 'D'.

    Won Class 'D'.
    Won Class 'C'.
    Won Class 'B'.
    Beat half of the Class 'A' and two or three Class 'R'.

    Raced at Sydney Motor Sport Park North Circuit. Group A 635 clone ran 1.25m. I stopped after second last session (slight oil leak, very minor but safety first) and ran a 1.1742m. Checked the SMP website for historic racing cars and the lap record for class SC (Historic Sports Cars) is a 1.176m. So right up there, on stock brakes, and just 1980's sports road suspension. Also still running heavy.

    Videos were very poor. GoPro Hero battery would not stay charged. 3 years of no use. See vid 1 and two, 1m mark and 20sec mark down the mains straight.

    Top speed at 100m braking marker, 230km/h.

    1st corner taken at around 175km/h.






    Mid August for next race. Will have GoPro setup for this and better filming. A much shorter tighter track but still part of SMP.

    Graphs from the dyno somewhere.

    Raced on the weekend. Class D - Historics.

    Went out in second fastest group. So out lap, warm up lap (very early and cold) and then diff let go. So only recorded lap was a cold warm up lap. Usually, that early, I run 3 or 4 warm up laps and then hammer it.

    But...... my take a look warm up lap was 1.3 seconds faster than the next in class could do all day. So 1.12 mins into a day of racing I'd won the class.
