Sad I think. According to the Top Gear write up on this, the M3 will now become the M4 when in two door form?

A bit crazy to change the car by which all others have come to be compared.

To make any logical sense, the 4 series should be the 4 door. Back in the beginning there was no 4 door 3 series. The 3 series was a small 2 door, the 5 series was a medium sized 4 door, the 6 series was a large/medium 2 door, and the 7 series was a large 4 door. Around '86 they came out with a 4 door 3 series and it's been a big seller ever since, which proves there was a hole in their product line. But there was also a hole in their number system. Calling it the 4 series would have made perfect sense.

Ah, but see traditionally, for their mainstream models, Audi has "owned" the even numbers, and BMW the odd numbers. Hence the A4, A6, A8 for Audi and 3-, 5- and 7-series for BMW. But then BMW "claimed" the "6" with the E24, and Audi retaliated some years later by claiming the "5" with their A5.

Compared to the 4-door of any given model, the 2-door is typically more stylish and desirable, so it makes more sense to give it a higher number. 3-series >>> 4-series. 5-series >>> 6-series. A4 >>> A5. And so on.

Don't forget that the original 3ers were actually considered saloons. I think the E36 was the first one that was considered a coupe from the factory.

And BMW owned the "6" number long before Audi went to the A4/6/8 designation.

The way that they are doing it now will be that all of their odd numbered cars are sedans and the even numbers are coupes.

They started calling the E30 2 door a coupe when they decided to build a 4 door version. Even though it's pretty much exactly the same size and shape as the E21 and 2002 "sedans". Confusing.

Audi lol. Prior to your post I the only Audi model I could have named is a Coupe GT. I've never even thought of them as being in direct competition with BMW.

Very true. It was the mid-'90s before Audi started to "rationalize" their nomenclature, and to their credit, they've been far more consistent than BMW has since then with their naming schema.

Silly marketing. It's just like retaining the old 'high' model numbers in the new MB and BMW cars with the new smaller engines. Bigger is better, and 435 is bigger than 335, right?

Make it 4 doors only, give it a hatchback, and AWD and you have yourself a Subaru competitor for Rally Car Racing. Keep the regular 3 series and then have a Rally Car 4 series.

The thought just occurred to me that it seems to share design similarity with the Audi A5.

The lines are very close to the eight. I like it better than the E63 style cars.

The concept 4 series coupe is stunning. I think that it looks like a smaller version of the 2010-12 6 series. It's sexy...Audi's bumped up the hp on the A4 and S4 so BMW better not sleep on it's competition, especially now that Porsche is about to debut a 4 door stretched version of the Cayman that's be within the same price range around the end of 2014!!

I like the idea of separating coupes and sedans from series nubers...

no need for random ic ci or nothing after your model number...

Oh and the car looks AMAZING. Like the updated 6 which is a coupe too

I take all that back because they have this stupid 6 grandtouring four door... what!

I assume you mean the GranCoupe. Did you see it in person? Really awesome car. I was not a fan of 4 door coupes, but Audi's A7 and this are quite stunning cars.

Wasn't too hard to figure out I hope.

I HATED the Merc CLS when it came out but the updated version is sex on wheels. The 6 coupe is muscles and awesome but I will wait for the update on the A7 to like it.

I think the 4 series looks awesome, however the 3 series is ICONIC and there are very few cars that have earned the respect that the name M3 carries. I think they are going to get hurt by changing the name.....but I'd love to have one!
