    BMW's new 4series

    1. It’s not the “BMW 4-series coupe concept.” It’s the “BMW Concept 4-series Coupe.” This makes sense to BMW and to no one else. Let’s move on.

    2. This is no longer a 3-series coupe, as you’ll have noticed from the above headline and nearly every sentence so far in this story. It’s a 4-series because, as BMW says, the numeral change is “a sign of greater exclusivity.” This also makes sense to BMW. But this is the same company that sells a car called the Z4 sDrive35is.
Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by hundreds of engineers that get paid thousands of dollars for something you bought at Pep Boys because your buddy who doesn't have a job told you it was 'better'?!?

So basically this is for the people who can't find a model they like in the sea of cars BMW already makes ... how many people can there possibly be to look at a 3 series, a Z4 or a 6 series and go "Nope, want something pretty much exactly the same but slightly different".

How did we live when we *gasp* only had the 3, 5 and 7 series?

Just being retarded ... but I don't think we've ever only had the 3,5 and 7 Series. The 6 Series was introduced in 1976(ish?), and the 7 Series came out later, in 1979 in the US. So the first time that the 3,5 and 7 Series were together would have also included the 6.

im fairly sure this is because audi now has that A/S5 out thats basically a 2 door A4 or something like that. the separate name gives people something to talk about i guess.

YUP! slowingcoupe sales and lack of interest on car lots, if they call it a 4 series, then the buyer things he is getting something better than a three series.

You're right, we had the 6 and 8 series I forgot ... still, that's far less than the multitude we have now. I don't even know all BMW models any more.

    Haha! No shit!!!

What comes to the car itself, for the most part it looks very good. I guess the shape of the lower front and rear bumper needs a bit growing on me, but other than those it looks pretty damn good to me.

    No 6 (last 89)
    No 8 (first 91)

...but we did have the Z1 during that time.

Yes, there are certainly more now than ever. And more variations within each model also.

Doesn't share as much (if anything not in the interior) with the sedan, so makes sense to give it a new model designation. People will get used to it soon enough, you could read the writing on the wall since the Z4 came out and the new 6 series. Odd vs even numbers seems the new sedan vs coupe/G-coupe series numbering scheme.

The latest generation of the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible leads the way worldwide in the premium mid-range coupe and convertible market. Indeed few, if any, rivals have made such a defining impact on this segment in terms of design, dynamics and efficiency. Now, with the unveiling of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe, BMW is looking ahead to the fourth generation of its sporty mid-range coupe – and reasserting its global leadership credentials in the process.

I like it! looks good, but i feel it wasn't necessary to make a whole 'nother series set. But as said above me it is just simple marketing

It's a concept for now, but will make production soon. And its sporting intent is evident in the car's proportions: it's 50mm longer, 45mm wider up front and 80mm wider at the back than the current 3 Coupe, as well as being 16mm lower.

I am glad they are borrowing styling cues up front from the 6 series and not the 5 or 7. The 6 really does look good up front and this is definitely quite the looker too.

I don't much care about naming conventions. Should I be un-happy that the new 740 is a 6 cylinder instead of an 8 cylinder? Or should I be up in arms that the new BMW line up will have a 1-7 series even though they never had a 2 or 4 before? I don't think so, in the end what is really important is how good the car is.

Apart from the name, I do like the look of this coupe. A shame BMW decided they have to follow the Audi A4/5 convention, I personally think that's unnecessary and just confuses the buyer. But let' see how it performs.

It has the mouth of a Puegot and the rear end of a Hyundai Genesis sedan. I don't like it, yet. Typical BMW model, no one likes it and eventually everyone loves it. I give myself 2 months.

BTW, that vent on the front fender, its been determined by Jalopnik that new styling cue is called a bimmerang.

Good looking car, but it's far too large to be considered "sporting" IMO. It's sporting in the same sense that a C63 is sporting.

Other than both having 4 wheels and 2 doors, I do not see the resemblance!!!

    really?

The door line, the taillights, the headlights, the front bumper, the rear quarter, the rear windows......

    it looks incredibly similar.
