help! gauges went crazy.

The other day I was driving on the freeway when all of the sudden my rpms started jumping like crazy from 1 to 8. But the thing is the motor wasn't actually doing it. The gauge just went crazy. So I pulled off to the shoulder afraid to drive. I turned it off and on, and the samething happened. Gauges started crazy, but engine didn't. So I disconnected my battery and it never happened again. Any ideas what that was? Anything helps.

Could be a loose plug, or possibly faulty contact somewhere

My gauges turn off occasionally when i drive, then turn back on immediately. I posted a few months back about my problem, and other members had the same issue but no one could tell me why it was doing this. I believe that i may have a bad ground somewhere and you may have the same problem.
