    I'm putting my 540 up :(

So I have decided to put my e39 540 up for a while, I was going to drive her all winter but it's time to let it rest and start tearing into the engine. I've put over 1500 into it in the last month and now another 2 coil packs have gone and I know it's time at 153 k miles to get in there and do the vanos and chain guides and what ever else we find that needs replacing. So if anyone has done something similar maybe let me know what to look for and do. I'm hoping it will look good inside and easy on my pocket , it's well worth it to me !

Consider getting an engine from a parts car, go through it (soup to nuts), have it ready for a weekend transplant in February or March. This will allow you to, keep transportation, no rushing (shop parts, pieces and machine work) give you 5-6 months to spread out the cost, not take up a lot of shop space, and resell the original engine once swapped.

An entgine in the hand is worth more than an engine of unknown provenance.

Exactly. If the OP has the time to do the work and having the car laid up for an extended period of time isn't a problem, it's better to stick with a known quantity. Hit all the trouble areas while you are in there and you should theoretically have an engine that is trouble free for a good long period of time.

I might be getting a job that allows me a demo vehicle to use. I'm hoping this pans out so that I can tear into my engine and go through it ! Thanks.
