Does anyone have a sense for what the gas mileage of the coupe vs the sedan is? I am thinking since it's the same engine hauling a shorter/lighter car the coupe will do better, but sometimes these things can be surprising...
Also, what are the back seats like in the coupe? Could it carry four adults on a 3-4 hr trip comfortably, or is the sedan preferable for that sort of thing?
Initially I wanted sedan only but they seem that much harder to find on account of lower production numbers.
I'd say the difference in mpg is negligible.
I've had my coupe with 4 adults during a short road trip, of course the sedan would be easier for access and such but no complaints. Rear leg room in the sedan probably isn't that much better than the coupe but I'd imagine there is better headroom for the rear passengers.
The sedan back seats are a little wider than the coupe's.
Current: 2011 X3 35i M-Sport, Deep Sea Blue Metallic, Oyster Napa interior, Afe intake, RaceChip Ultimate.
Past: 1998 M3 sedan, Cosmos Schwartz Metallic, Black interior, Euro 6-speed, AA Stage II TwinScrew supercharger, and a bunch of other mods.
The sedan is 1/2" narrower and 1" taller. Same length.
Same engine.
A bit heavier, depending on your features.
I love my sedan.

Why are you interested in an M3 for comfort or gas milage is my question.
I have a personal preference for the coupe but a sedan can be sexy if done right.
Get a red one if you can they are lighter and faster.

My NSX is my fast, sexy, fuel-inefficient car so my interest in the M3 is as a non-boring daily driver. Also because it comes in purple (Techno Violet) which will match the NSX well.
Most of the time I will be driving alone or with 1 passenger but I would like to be able to take 3-4 friends to the beach once in a while (~1hr drive) or even down to LA if I feel like it... and I don't want the people in the back to feel like they lost the lottery.
Gas Mileage will depends on how you drive and how your basic maintenance is (ie: Air Filter and Spark Plugs)
Suspension will depend on what shocks it's running. Should be the exact same I believe.
Sedans are a little harder to find in good shape, and typically more expensive when you do find them.
Just got my windows tinted.
According to my research, Techno Violet (my color of choice) sold 547 coupes and 227 sedans - in manual, of course. I didn't look at automatics. So, just over 2x as difficult to find a TV sedan all other things being equal, though I suspect the mod/race/wreck survival factor for sedan owners vs. coupe owners is slightly higher...

My buddy just sold his NSX a few months ago. For some reason he bought a Nissan 370Z. I still don't understand to this day....

If you're taking Shoreline Hwy to Stinson, I wouldn't be worried about mileage! haha. Just keep your eyes open for both and go with whatever one has the options and color you come across first.
Wow. Nice NSX. Now go find a nice TV e36.

Mods. Lots of Mods.
i've driven a few NSX's (used to work at an Acura dealership), its the only car i've driven to date that handles as good as my M3 coupe. Definately will put lots of smiles on your face.
at 6ft and pushing 200lbs, i would NEVER want to ride in the back seat of my M for more than 5 mins. i know i should go on a diet.
i wonder if the OP ever found his TV? 2 or 4 doors?

I passed on a '95 Daytona coupe w/ M-cloth interior. He was charging a few thousand more than other clean comparable sedans (I've only owned sedans so far), but it had a motor of questionable origin. Chassis had 100k+ but motor had 80k. First owner likely blew it drag racing in the 90's. It also had zero documentation, LTWs two-tone powdercoat job, and the autocheck looked questionable. Not that the wheels were an issue, just makes me question the judgement of said owner. Too many variables for the price imo. And he should've put an s52 instead of the s50..

Amazing that this thread randomly popped back to life a few days ago all by itself... the NSX finally has a sibling as of Friday, but it's not a TV E36. Here is what I ended up with:
