Or is it just that the weld quality/control with a MIG is not up to par and the welds will fail faster?

I saw at least one guy in this thread using mild steel but i'm not sure if it was made with a MIG or TIG? I don't care if it doesn't look pretty as long as it functions.

I've fabricated my downpipe and exhaust on my car with my MIG and although I still have a lot to learn, I love welding and would like to do as much of it as possible.
How many amps is the MIG you have?

You can definitely mig a mild steel manifold. On SS the lack of post flow is asking for cracks later on.

It might be hard to weld the middle of a collector with MIG though.

I use an old transformer machine. Look for P&H tig machines. sometimes you find them for dirt cheap when people dont realize what they have. I bought my tig for $500 with everything. so far ive replaced a few diodes for maintanance reasons. I can weld something as small as two razors together. truly an amazing machine for its age. only downfall is its size and weight.

And power requirements. Transformer machines need way more amps than inverters on the service.

Yep - that's what turned me on to the inverters. As far as I know there is no such thing as a 110v compliant transformer machine.

I am ordering a WP-9 soon and I'm going to be trying out Arc Zone's Hybrid Tungsten soon as well, they claim it to be the best.

I'm working in Detroit this week and one of our suppliers connected me with a local race nut. I got to go over and tour his shop, which was nothing short of amazing.

Either way, the guy was really good with plasma welding and adapting it to different processes. He is building a tube for tube replica of a Porsche 917 long tail out of chromoly and the whole thing is plasma welded. Its absolutely amazing, and I had never seen plasma welding before.

I know its worthless without pics, but I will try and get some of the frame as its just truly amazing.

Don't let it get too awesome sounding, "plasma" welding is jut TIG welding with a small arc.

Well it uses tungsten in the torch with a different nozzle, true. You need a different unit to run it though, and the welds make the best TIG welding I have seen look big and sloppy.

I guess thats not very cool though.

Yeah there's a different machine used, but it's the same process all in all, its just fusion welding at the end of the day - we see it a lot of it in our industry

I'm not a fan of them for the WG pipes, too much movement. IMO a flex pipe should be added in the DP after the WG tie in.
I haven't seen or heard of any failures without them to warrant adding one.

    Thanks Ryan..!

My next project on the list is tackle the E46 M3. This time I will use a gas lens to weld and back purge and make the welds look really nice.
