Yeah that kind of weld around a 3" pipe would pay a lot in the pipe industry! I suspect a positioner but you never know!

you all do some great tig work... one of these days i will get one. I really want to get into making things but im running out of stuff to make. I also had no clue what a positioner was until i googled it and this is the cheapest one i found http://www.arc-zone.com/index.php?ma...0pf10dadm835c6

That one has the torch holder but most people hold and manipulate the torch/fill rod but rotate the piece/pipe.

What difference a smaller water cooled torch can make. I've been able to weld in much tighter places than before. Here's a little ditty I just finished.
The cooler I made is working great except it needs a fan to keep the coolant temp down, so using a floor fan blowing across the cooler for now.
Need to find a 120V fan to mount on it.

That manifold has me confused. All the piping looks the same size, from the exhaust ports, where they tie into the turbo flange. And the wastegate piping?? The setup looks to be a divided/twin scroll, but the wastegates are run into a common plenum. One of the more interesting I6 manifolds I have seen in a long time. I would love to see it bolted up and see what its working around.

I wonder if that makes it being split pulse styled pointless. Or looks like the real point was for better boost control. ?

Yes it does, no question. For "better boost control" there are plenty of creative details that could have been implemented to maintain the great benefit of the twin scroll. This manifold already is a bit of a compromise from the looks of it as far as the matching of the correct cylinders separating the correct cylinders into each side of the division, which is typical for the space constraints of bmw's. Taking it a step further, and then digressing in opening up the division through a common wastegate makes all of the challenge of the twin design pretty much useless, but for sure a great practice in fabrication.

It wouldn't be that tough to simply bisect and divide the two pathways internally to keep them separate up to the common wastegate. I recently almost purchased a manifold with a similar issue, and I was going to split open the junction and weld in a division up to the wg or start that whole section over from scratch.

What really gets me on the design also, if controlling boost is a huge priority, or keeping from creep from happening, the wastegate has 360 degrees of elboes in it, not including the wastegate elboe (a 5th really). It seems to me, this could have been done with a fraction of the piping. But before I really judge, I really don't know what constraints he was working around. I don't have enough perspective on it to really comment for sure. It would be great if the builder commented on his goals and philosophy on the manifold.

I would suspect those comments to go like 99% of other - "I had to make it fit, work, and not cost me a ton of money."

At the hardware store. What gloves are you guys running for TIG welding?

I was having a hard time being precise with my big-ol arc-welding gauntlets.
