Which fuel injector cleaners do you guys use on your I6 E39s??

Just as the post says, I am looking to see which fuel injector cleaner do you guys use on your I6 E39s? The guy at my local Auto Zone told me that the STP line of fuel injector cleaners was safe to use on BMW fuel systems, but i figured I would ask you guys on here to see what you guys would recommend....

Seafoam is always a good one that at least has a lot of consumer feedback behind it. Most other products likely dont do crap. I doubt any liquid will really "clean" the fuel injectors, unless you run it super concentrated like 1 bottle of Seafoam to 5 gallons of gas.

Using Seafoam through the intake will probably yield much better results than running it through the injectors though.

Ah yes... time for the holy wars again.

BG 44K, STP, ProTec, Liqui-Moly, and others -- trimethylbenzene

    Wynn's -- dimethyl ethyl benzene

Seafoam -- 50% light oil, 30% isopropyl alcohol, 20% naphtha. (as per the MSDS) and a shitload of hype.

Personally, I just use a good grade of fuel, but if I suddenly had a change of heart, I'd go with a Techron or maybe a trimethylbenzene based.

Aren't all pump stations have some cleaning solution/treatment for every car? It is suppose to clean the injectors and the intake valves and someting else as well I can't remember. I believe it's called tier 2 something.

    Huge fan of the seafoam.
I use it in the fuel tank. I use a half a can when
the tank is 1/4 and drive it till I can stand it anymore then fill
    up with 93 octane.
Smooth as silk engine with 154K on it.

I am waffling as to trying it in the crankcase a few miles before an oil change.
I will always own a BMW.

Good old "check engine light in a can".....seems like everytime I use any of that stuff, the check engine light comes on, no matter which car I use it in.

Personally, if the car is running OK, leave it alone. Use good gas from quality stations.

I've used Berryman B-12 in my cars and engines (fuel tanks, carburetors, injectors and crankcases) since '65 with no problems. I also like Siloo, Seafoam and Marvel Mystery Oil.

    ^^^

Also, I think the Dealer recommends using the Techron stuff every 3k-4k miles...

And, IMO, today's gas even though it might be Top-Tier, is no-where clean enough no matter how much additives they throw in there, mostly because of the crappy Ethanol the Government keeps trying to push...

    Thanks!

Berryman -- 65% toluene 25% Acetone 5+% Hexane, and a dash of alcohol. Sounds yummy!!!

Amsoil -- mineral oil and Naphtha... but not as much as seafoam

Lucas -- unknown (MSDS says no harmful ingredients). Rumor has it mineral oil and a dash of dish soap. Note that engineering calls it a Upper Cylinder Lubricant, Marketing calls it a cleaner.

Techron. The dealer uses it so If I have any problems, they won't be able to blame that!

I use Techron as well, but only in the last tank of fuel before an oil change. I used it in my track car, and an oil analysis confirmed that the Techron was able to find its way into the oil in the pan.

The only time I've used a fuel additive was in a high mile car that I suspected the PO wasn't taking care of it that well (didn't know how to pop the hood, was low on oil). I changed the oil after and pumping Chevron 91 from here on out I don't see a reason to do it again.

On the 540i I got the injectors cleaned for $135 ultrasonically while the intake was out and then replaced fuel filter. Maybe overkill, but it made me happy to have a nice printout showing my injectors were now happier. Can't do that with a can.

As rf900 said, check the MSDS sheet to see what the contents are. I've not used any fuel cleaner in the last 10 years because I feel it's pretty much wasted money. Seems like in my chainsaws I can sometimes blow out some of the carbon if I bring the piston to tdc with the spark plug out and pour in some cleaner (although kerosene+gas would probably do just as well) then put spark plug back in and turn cylinder upside down. Let it sit a few hours, pull plug, crank engine, put in new spark plug, spray a little carb cleaner in the carb, and fire it up. The carbon gets softened with the soak and some blows out into the muffler. I also take out the screen flame arrestor on the muffler before doing this. Naphtha is the same as coleman white gas... which is regular gasoline without the additives. The majority and rest of most fuel system cleaners is a light oil/fuel like kerosene.

I tried the Gumout stuff a few months back. Meh.

I just use Shell 93. Seems to keep the boogers from clogging the nostrils.

That's my point. Aren't pump stations have all the cleaning agents that keeps our engines breathing healthily?

My question is.....are those claims about keeping the valves clean true? (Such as shell and a few others) or.....or...is it just a marketing gimmick??

I think an abundance of valve train deposits depend as much on driving habits as fuel quality.
