Hey Guys! I'm new here to this side of the forum but no forced induction yet but SERIOUSLY thinking of doing it and I want to start but dont know where to start. I'm located in connecticut close to Hartford. I try to do most of the work on my e36 328I, it has 215000 but my self tested compression on all cylinders is 200psi and I just finished my 6speed swap using the e39 m5 tranny after wasting alot of money paying soneone else to do it with bad results. My engine is all stock with not even a CAI. Please excuse my questions because sometimes they might seem like dumb questions to you the experienced e36 turbocharged owners. My first question is...
    1. Where should I start. My final power goal is about 600whp max although there is the possibility of being satisfied at 500 but who knows.
    2. Should I just by another m52 and start a engine build from scratch so im sure my bottom end can take that type of power from early?
    3. I've heard about the MLS gasket to lower the compression but ias there I limit to use it?
    4. Are the TCD turbo manifolds and intercooler setup any good? Do you know anyone.running these?

Wel that's my questions for now, I await to hear your opinions.
    THE TIME DRAWS NEAR!

    600 will be tougher w/ a 2.8. 500 will be accomplished w/ .140 MLS s50/s52 cams and a 35r and around 20 psi.

If you have good compression I say go w/ it. As far as the manifold and intercooler goes, I STRONGLY suggest getting a kit w/ tuning.
    Best bet would be a SPA manifold w/ a gt35r and a 12x24x3 intercooler.

PM me if you are interested in pricing on a full kit including tuning ; )

    Gt35R E36/6, S60R TI/AC.
600 will not be likely on a 2.8 with out some good engine mods, ie rods, pistons, rings, block work.
with a engine at your mileage, with a kit, be happy with 400.

I would do what Butters recommends. He has done what you want to do, on a higher mileage M52, so his experience is good.

If your time and budget are unlimited, by all means build the perfect motor. It will be better than a stock motor with an MLS gasket and studs. However, I am a big fan of driving the car and not making the biggest or most expensive project in the world out of it. Turbo it and drive it. Build a motor down the road if you want.

TCD is a less efficient log style manifold with a tangential discharge that requires an oddball less efficient turbine housing. If you want an inexpensive but good manifold, use the Spa.

Butters will be holding the next initiation for the club soon. When I joined, you had to drink 4 Monster energy drinks in one day and come back from the dragstrip on a tow truck.

At least it's Monster and not Four Loko.

4 monsters for the ride up to the strip !

I would love to get a day where we all meet up @ the strip.
We can rent a bus for us all to get home while we watch our cars on the back of tow trucks.

Maybe it would be more economical to reserve an empty car transport truck?

Could be. But we don't exactly think "economical" . If we did we wouldn't be going to the strip to begin with.

Is it worth turbocharging a vanos m50? I think i am very close to needing a new headgasket @240k miles and when i have the head at the machine shop it would be an opportune time to do some other mods.

What kind of cost am i looking at to get 350-400 horse

Tune, HFM, injectors, manifold, turbo, coolant and oil lines, oil feed adapter, maybe turbo motor mount arm, intake pipe, air filter, intercooler pipes, silicon couplers and clamps, intercooler, wastegate, bypass or blowoff valve, exhaust pipe, stronger than stock M3 clutch, lower compression headgasket, ARP studs, and probably a bunch more stuff. Every now and then someone looks at the $1000 ebay turbo kits, decides this will be an easy and inexpensive undertaking, and ends up spending a lot more than planned. I doubt you would spend less than $3k and think you could easily spend $5k.

yeah i would prefer a ls2 at that cost ive been looking for an s50 or s52 for a while but no luck locally. i did just pick up an lq4 cheap but its just to much fabrication work at this point for me to do that with all the other projects i have going on, i just want a bolt in and go deal

S52 would be closest to bolt in and go. The 3.2L has much more torque than your 2.5L. I doubt you will spend much less than $2k on an S52 swap with tune. You could try a NOS wet kit with jetting for about 60 hp if you want the cheapest power in terms of up front cost.

Don't you have a trailer hitch on your E36 now? Would a D'lan hitch be sufficient to tow a dolly with a 3200 lb E36 on it?
