    hi guys
    i want to put M5 cluster on my 2001 530 ms43
so i asked darren smith who has already done it. his page https://sites.google.com/a/netmgr.co...e39-m5-cluster
    his answer was:
"The LEDs aren't really possible without considerable effort and external circuits but to get the oil temperature working just update your engine ecu to the latest firmware, the latest sends the temperature on the canbus. As you have an m43 ecu this will work fine, using winkfp, be careful though you can easily brick it."

For those who have the DSC light that comes up after a few miles, please note that since I have upgraded my OEM wheels from 17" to 18" I no longer get this.
It seems there is some setting maybe in the cluster or the DSC/ASC module related to wheels revolution and since the M5 never came up with 17" that might explain why this is working now.
So everything works now but the oil temperature still

Were your tires all the same size on the 17's or were they different sizes front to back? If the overall diameter is different by more than +/-3% that will set the light that you were seeing. It's assuming that you have a flat tire!

Yeah I have been riding along with a flat tyre daily since the last 14 months. Like.

I have coded another car with 18" wheels and the guy never had the issue. I could not understand why. While many others have the issue. Now I know why. It is the wheel setup/coding for 17" if at all possible, somewhere that I need to figure out.

It's not the wheel size as much as the overall diameter of the tires. They need to be within a few percent of the stock tire diameter, first. Then within 3% +/- of each other. If your tires (tyres) are too small from stock or too large (diameter not width) then it too sets off the DSC light. I've seen E38's with wheels as small as 15" and as large as 22" but the tire size was very close to stock diameter and no DSC light. I've also seen the same wheel sizes with incorrect tire diameters throw the DSC light.

I know the system uses a revolutions calculation, but I am not sure if that calculation is able to be changed.

Yeah everything was 100% oem with the 17" wheels.
The issue probably has to do with the tyres as you are saying since the m5 never came with them, 255x45x17 on rear etc. So far I can't find anything related to diametdr, wheel size, revolution, distance etc for tyres/wheels in those modules
    Cheers

You are right it was an option, style 66 wheels, non staggered, 235x45x17 all around
Mines were style 66 too staggered with 255 in the back.

255x?? Here is where you can have your issue. Lets say you stuck with the stock 235 45 17 in front with a radius of 321.6 mm, diameter of 643.3 mm, circumference of 2021 mm that does 796 revolutions per mile. While you add 255 45 17 in the rear that has a radius of 330.6 mm, diameter of 661.3 mm, circumference of 2077.5 mm that does 775 revolutions per mile. This would cause your DSC to light up as you are outside of the +/-3% value.

A good place o keep up with front/rear values is a tire size calculator. I use http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html and yes it's a miata page but they did a great job on the java application for both graphical and written reference.

+100 740iSport303. the tire calcs pages (Miata or otherwise) are invaluable. not only for total diameter, but also for doing offset / ET checks with spacers and different wheel swaps.

235 on 8j on the front and 255 on 9j on the back. 100% Oem.
I wonder could that be because I had 20mm spacers?

But what profile on the 235 and 255? Were they both 45 or one of them 40 or 35? The rim width (8J or 9J doesn't) make the difference. The entire tyre size provides us with the diameter, circumference, radius and revolutions per mile. Please replace the following ?? marks.

    Front 235 ?? 17 on 8j
    Rear 255 ?? 17 on 9j

By the way, I am in awe of you getting the M5 speedo to install and fully function and hope to do it myself. But I'm sure I'll need help before I screw up the electronics.

Found this while poking around with NCS Expert in the FSW_PSW.TRC

    OELST_SENS_DEF
    nicht_melden
    OELST_SENS_DEF_WARNUNG
    nicht_aktiv
    OELSTAND_MOTOR_CAN
    nicht_aktiv

OELSTAND_MOTOR_CAN has something to do with the oil level sensor and it looks like that setting, if it were active, would transmit the signal over CAN. I just need to figure out how to edit and apply the setting

    - - - Updated - - -

Found this too a little further up... not sure what to make of it:

    OELTEMPERATUR_ADC_WERT
    nicht_aktiv
    OELTEMPERATUR_FEHLER_1
    untergrenze
    OELTEMPERATUR_FEHLER_2
    obergrenze
    OELTEMPERATUR_SKALA
    nicht_aktiv

SKALA means scale i beleive,.. and the untergrenze and obergrenze has something to do with the coolant temp, and being that the oil temp reading is an average of the oil temp + coolant temp, these must be an under and over reading

I've activated those on my 7. It causes com errors since the info isn't found.

    Hey GSXRliterbikz,
I sent out my cluster for pixel repair (BTW it is a e53 X5 4.6 cluster).
Should be back by Saturday or Monday.
Perhaps with your assistance it can get programed?

P.S. I installed the seats and I gotta say... I... F&#~*ng... LOVE them (sry for the expletive), lol!
Check them out here (better pictures coming soon!):

Yeah... ummm.... what he said... lol!

But I've trying to educate myself to better understand the subject.
I've concluded that I need to get myself a computer
that can do all the programing on my e39 (like your GSXRliterbikz).
All in due time I guess. In the meantime, the cluster works great.

Aaah. OK. I thought you meant all that was sorted. Gotcha. I'd be up to try the 4.6 flash if that's the key but I got a tune now so would lose that. And I don't want to do the cluster swap unless EVERYTHING works right.

How did you guys do the VIN match - did you virginize the old cluster, or didja clone / swap chips from yours?

We should get together suntime. I know we tossed it out there a while back but never closed the loop - are you still in my neckadawoodz?

How did you guys do the VIN match - did you virginize the old cluster, or didja clone / swap chips from yours?

We should get together suntime. I know we tossed it out there a while back but never closed the loop - are you still in my neckadawoodz?
The VIN and chassis number were copied from the IKE and loaded onto the new cluster.
GSXRliterbikz knows more about it then I do.
I just let him do his thing and stood out of his way.
I can't stress enough what a cool guy he is!

To get the tach and oil temp to work is a bit harder.

From what what I have read in this thread:
    1. You need to save save (back-up) the 540i tuning maps
    2. Flash the X5 4.6i with winfp to the ECU
    3. Start the car with ^ said mapping installed
    4. And then flash back the 540i tuning map over the newly flashed X5 4.6

I have yet to try this. Again, GSXRliterbikz is the one who installed my cluster and he know more than I.
He is aware of the instructions I wrote above and is looking into how to do it exactly as it is a little vague.
If this gets done, then all that would be left is to get the correct mileage in the cluster.

Summer is nearly here. I live in the Methuen/Lawrence area and work in Andover.
Let me know the when and where.
