I believe this to be the final mounting point for the turbo. Even though this engine bay is huge, I'm still having major difficulty running the exhaust. I will have to completely remake the drivers side engine mount to clear the downpipe if the turbo stays where it is.

The only reason this would move is if I cant setup the wastegate properly. I will not sacrifice boost control for space constraints.

I messed with the passenger side manifold for a while and came up with this:

After fully tacking it together, I decided it was closer to the A/C compressor than I would like, so it was pulled apart.

I need to get a wastegate before moving forward. Looking at the PTE46mm.

I don't keep up with this enough but could you have just reverse mounted the truck headers or does that hit the steering shaft too?

Or what about running the drivers out the rear and snaking around the back of the motor to the front side of the passenger and mount the turbo there?

swapping truck manifolds is very popular, the down side is you have to loose the A/C which, at this time, i am not willing to do. The other option you mentioned was one i was messing with as well, on both sides, but it comes back down to having no where to run the larger downpipe.

    Gotcha.

I assume running the down pipe out the fender or down low prior to the wheel is out of the question?

Would a mount shaped like the one in this thread work?

    http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1736215

What size down pipe do you plan on using? I could draw up a couple arcs for a new mount for you. Just let me know and I can email you a .dwg file

yea, the motor basically sits on the rack, the only way to go down is under the subframe. Out the fender is also not possible with the design of the front subframe.

It will be 3" downpipe until it gets out of the engine bay, then It will step up or got to dual. I'm hoping I can make a jig to hold your mount, remove what is needed and weld in a section of steel 3.5" tube and reinforce it of coarse.

I guess I wasn't very clear with my question.

If you ran the driver's side exhaust to the passenger side, why couldn't you run the down pipe out the fender or down below? Mount the turbo somewhere behind the light/radiator area similar to a top mount inline 6 layout.

I also saw this piping layout which may cut down on the 'packaging'. I am not sure how well this setup works. It appears to be a 'pass through' type of setup.

lol, what rock have you been living under?

It seems that they used to be somewhat “special” and “rare”, and oddity among swaps. Now everyone and their mother in law is swapping them due to the staggering depreciation of relatively newer chassis (E39, E38, E46). These cars are reaching the end of the life of many factory components, and non-enthusiast owners don’t want to drop thousands to rebuild a transmission or engine to keep a 10-15 year old car running. Combine that with the low cost of mass produced LS series drivetrain, and it’s a match made in heaven. It’s really kind of fascinating when you think about the economics of how it all comes together.

My Tilton clutch master cylinder basicly bolted right onto the e39 pedal bracket. Just a small amount of grinding to clear the bracket I made. I have the e36 clutch pedal in it now, but I need to get a e39 pedal as they have a slightly different angle to them. I will post pics of my clutch m/c setup tomorrow.

Great news! So now it's confirmed that the GTO shifter & trans mount isolator work with Josh's mounts and the Tilton master will work for clutch.

I used it in the e36. I have a 750lb/ft clutch and the stock m/c's weren't having it. I went through 3 back to back. E39 m/c may work, but this car is an auto so I dont have one and I already have the Tilton.

Spend the day working on the drivers side manifold.

Started with a drawing I did on Wednesday.

Here is where I left this evening.

    Very happy with the outcome.

Wow! Gorgeous, that turbo is sexy! Wish you could TIG weld it, it'd just make it look cleaner.

    ^ I hope you're right.

    A little weekend update.
    Pass side manifold mocked up

    On the motor

Here you can also see my new alternator relocation bracket from Hawks Third Gen Parts. I was concerned about it fitting under the hood, but it clears by about 3/4". Yay!
It uses a common GM alternator rather than a stock one because the space is so tight.
