    My e39 LSx swap

After the untimely demise of my S/C'd LS1 powered 325i, I made the decision to move on and up... to a bigger car with more room. More room for a proper turbo setup with a goal of having a daily driven, 11 second, 600whp 5 series that can hang turns as well as it can go in a line.

Today marks the beginning of my new journey.

Very nice! Can't wait to see it all come together! Really interested in how you do the turbo setup as I'll be doing turbo on mine eventually.

Hell yeah, can't wait to see this develop? Did the new car have a bum head gasket or transmission?

Bad auto transmission. Sadly, while messing with the car tonight I have found it has some major electrical issues. I'll need to mess with it a bit more before I decide to move forward.

    E39, ah yeah...

Hope you are able to sort the electrical out and move forward with this.

What kind of electrical issue? As long as it's not a flood/water car or lightning strike, I'd think it's manageable...right?

I have gotten most everything functioning correctly other than the wipers dont work at all, the radio comes and goes and whatever display thing is next to the radio thing has not cut on yet. The more I am in this car, the more i cant stand tan interior. I will have to either find a wrecked black interior donor, sell this heap and find another one with black interior or learn to deal with it. Inside its in really good shape, I just want to yak when i sit in its creamy cockpit.

She looks heavy to me I share the same sentiments with regard to the tan interior. Luckily it shouldn't be too tough to find a wrecked car with a black interior. You could also do pseudo-two tone like the guy in the link below.

I also share you're dislike for the orange-ish tan interiors of the 90's. Not to mention it doesn't age very well. My RX7 had that color interior and I converted it to black; but that probably had less than a third of the parts you'd have to swap on this one. And that's on top of the LS swap and sorting out of the car.

I'm sure you're excited to get another project going, but if you're already not happy about the interior then I'd suggest passing this one on and finding a shell that you really want. Unless you find a wrecked M5, swap the interior and other goodies...but that would be ALOT of work.

Me personally, I love the tan, but I agree, black is much better. I can't wait to see the end results when the swap is finished. I love reading up on the e39 swaps. Gives me more motivation for when I get home from Afghanistan to pick up another 540 and do the swap, also gives me hints and idea on what issues may come up along the way.

I may be contacting you later for some info on wiring as no one seems to share much info in their build threads.

The tear down began. The car seems to be in really good shape.

Motor and transmission mounts were ordered today, thanks to Jesus Freak for putting in the effort so I dont have to this time!

It can be as simple or as difficult as you want it to be:

how long did it take you to remove the front clip? i will be doing the same thing when it's time for mine. seems like a really sensible option for removing/reinstalling, especially if it's only a bit of extra work.

    looking good!

You can have it all off in less than an hour. It's the only way to do it.

Nice work. If you decide to ditch the interior, give me a shout. I'd be interested in some cheap parts to keep mine going assuming they fit my car. My driver's seat & driver's C panel are shot.

If you need any electrical help, I may be of assistance as well. For your wipers, I'd start by making sure the wiper relays are being commanded on. I actually had the wiper motor die on my car.

All ready for a test fit, mounts should be here Friday! I am hoping the F body pan will work with the mounts.

Moving along nicely, sounds like you'll have this knocked out in no time!

I'd hate to sound like a Debbie Downer, but I'm fairly certain the front of the sump of the F body pan will hit the subframe. I'm using an Autokraft pan with JF's mounts and I have about a quarter inch of clearance. According to the LSx oil pan thread on ls1tech the Autokraft pan sump is about 2 inches shorter in that area than the F body pan.
