1. Jack up left rear of car. Place wheel chocks behind right side wheels and put blocks under left rear wheel.
2. Remove 10MM bolt holding assembly to bracket.
3. Slide assembly down until it is hanging in clear view from rubber hoses.
4. Remove hose clamps from steel lines. Put drip pan under hose connection. Rap a rag around hose, twist hose to break loose, twist back and forth while pulling on line until free.
5.Drain gas from filter assembly.
6.Lay old assembly on ground and take picture so you can remember configuration.
7. Line up new parts.
8. Remove bracket from old filters by loosening bolt in center of bracket.
9. Slide new filters into bracket, center filters in bracket and tighten bolt.
10. If you are using old hoses, swap hoses to new filters. If you are replacing hoses, assemble hoses following pattern of old setup. It is important to stick to the same configuration on the inlet side of the filters as it gets tight on the top side of the filter assembly. If you are replacing hoses leave the two main hoses a little long and cut them once assembly is in place.
11. Slide new assembly into place and tighten bolt. Connect main lines, tighten clamps and you are done.
Notes: I used a set of hose clamps which I had in the garage but I would make sure you have fuel line hose clamps as thety do not cut into the hose. The filters are marked on the bottom to indicate the outlet side of the filter. Make sure this is connected to the line coming from the front of the car. The kine running along the tank is the inlet side. Start the car (it will crank for a little bit until the line has pressure).

Nice write up but i would'nt use those hose clamps, I was lead to believe 840's had 1 filter in another post, Do you know if it's certain years with single filters? Tia!

Yes, during 1995, they switched to a single filter design - even during M60 engine production.Originally Posted by 8eights

8eights yes, I updated the notes recommending the use of fuel line clamps.
I had Pelican call me as I listed the build date as 8/94 and they list the cut off as 2/94 for 2 filters as does autohaus. I believe the cut off is 4/95 as is the case on the 540. I am the proud owner of 2 new long Mann filters for later models which I purchased from Autohaus.

Nice write-up..Wouldn't it be easier to do this with the wheel off?
I suppose it might help a little but the filter assembly is tucked up in a pocket so the wheel would only give you a little more room to move around while on your back.
Nice write-up.
thanks for spending the time to take pics.
Interesting because I have a 94 840ci and when I checked one of the receipts from the previous owner, and it shows 1 fuel filter replaced. The part number is 13-32-1-702-632 $26, done at 99892 miles. I find it to be unusual to replace just 1 fuel filter if in fact 2 should exist. But my car now has 120k so thought I'd replace it on my minor tune up. Any input on this guys?
Hi, guys. Should my May 1997 840Ci have one or two filters? I have one, installed on the driver's (left) side. Parts sheets that I've found say two. It's quite possible that some nob fooled around down there and removed one. I have two new Bosch units on standby.
Several things have been "rigged" on this car and I'm in the process of undoing them. Any help is appreciated.

Hi,
I have a 95 840 and when I replaced the fuel filter it had the original two canister model, but I was sold the single version. What's the proper way to mount it. I have tied to mount mine using tie wraps and it keeps moving. Any ideas or pictures would be appreciated. Stephenwilliams1@cox.net
Thx
Also, it's a lot easier and less mess to pull the fuel pump relay/s to empty the filters by running the engine without them, She will die down quickly relieving all pressure.
Old thread, I know, but a follow up question:
A member in AZ has a Canadian Spec 840 that has a 2 fuel filter setup on his car. Can this setup be upgraded to the single filter on later cars, and if so, what are the part numbers for the single filter? What are the part numbers for the double filters? The fuel filters on the car are shorter than the the cars with M70's

Build date: 6/94
Last 7 of VIN: CC89611

I'm not sure a single filter is an upgrade. Much easier to replace like for like. The 850 fuel system has two pumps running to two filters. When they made the 840, they used one pump but kept the double filter setup, at least initially. They probably decided it was overkill and that a single filter could save a couple of DM. The single filter of later cars is a bit longer and slimmer and doesn't fit in the bracket for the double filter. I ordered the single filter by mistake, tried to make it work, but ended up running out for two filters like the original setup.
Brett
Olin,
Just looking for a clean filter solution, not really looking to re pipe the car. Do you have the part number for the short twin filter setup? We keep getting the longer filters that are found on the M70 cars.
Any help is appreciated - would this part number fit: 13321720102
