Great to hear it. I could share what I have. My best .xls sheet is a 2013 excel sheet that filters the data and graphs all the bits at the same time. Allows for a way to quickly look for trends and anomolies. If you drop me an E-mail I can reply back next week with the file.
Been meaning to update.
I have disassembled my electric car and sent the chassis off to the scrap yard. What's this have to do with this project? My Ls1-E36 is now back in the garage again. So I can now fiddle with it again and hook up things to it for testing. (hate to do that in the driveway). Also I had promised myself that I'd not buy another car until I sold one.

Does scrapping count as "selling"? What's the next car purchase?
Awesome! I have an S54 and M6 if you want to do a swap.
Hey Thaniel,
Hows the project coming?
I've made the E46 cluster run off my LS1 (and Landrover and Laguna) so proof of concept is done and all the basic pieces are there for someone to use. To get the step by step instructions or a packaged system, which seems most are waiting for, it really needs to be installed in an E46 with an LS1 to fine tune and debug. So basically that's where it sits until someone installs a setup in their car or I swap an E46 myself.
On the swaping an E46 myself I still wonder how much I'd have to change on my engine to get it to fit into the E46. If I could use my headers and oil pan...... On the other hand I've considered selling my car and doing something else.
Thaniel, I'll bring my car up and we can use it as a guinea pig! Should be running in a couple of weeks. (updated build thread).
to use vorshlag mounts you need a Holley GM retrofit pan (the gm performance is supposed to be a direct replacement, but I didn't want to try it) and from what I have seen the headers will not work.
However the trans mount and motor mounts look the same.
I would really like my oil temp sensor on the dash to work and if I could get my tach to work without the trigger wheel that would be even better, 1 less bracket to mount and 1 less thing to worry about. After that I would really like to convert the Cruise control to analog
I do have to say, the swap has been pretty easy, time consuming, but not overly difficult.
Where is the biggest differents in the headers? (My current swap parts aren't Vorshlag though). My pan already has been clearanced some for my E36 install. The E46 can use an E36 steering rack so how much different can the steering shaft location be? Yah I know... a lot. If I could get my hands on another E46 project car. Nothing forsale in my town.
We'll see how it goes. My E36 Ls1 does a fine job. Going to E46 would just be getting a "pretty face" and loosing some good suspension bits I installed in the E36
there was an e46 M3 with a blown motor (non sunroof car) up north a little while ago, perfect LS candidate.
Not sure where the difference is, I think its in the clearance fo the frame rails. I am going off what vorshlag has said - and mind you I am not happy with the quality of my headers, drivers side touches motor mount and the outlet points upward to the bottom of the car and the passenger side is so close to the frame the V band clamp rests ont he bottom of the car, but the outlet points at a slight angle downward.

Bad news: LS1 interface testing is no longer possible at the moment.
My BMW being towed away by it's new owner.

Good news. This happened first:

And so I still have:

Looking for an E46 now. Though there are times I think having a "normal" car might be fun.

Good to see you are coming to the dark side!
Im working on fixing an exhaust leak. I ce that is sorted I will be good to go. Car drives well except for the missing and backfiring.

2001 330i w/ manual trans but needs a new clutch. For $2500 I decided to buy it.
Nice! Sounds like a great deal.

As you know, my interest in the E46 CANBus involves integrating stand-alone EMS's in the chassis.
Do you have any idea whether the E46 CAN devices (particularly ABS controller) will respond to requests for data (Remote Transmission Request) as mentioned in page 11 of http://share.qclt.com/bmw%E8%B5%84%E.../BUS%20_en.pdf ? In the MegaSquirt world, that is how CAN works with the exception of a few ecu broadcasts.
Thanks!

Yah I remember your interest. Honestly been thinking about using a stand alone in a project I'm thinking of. Right now it's just in my head but thinking it could be intersting. Would love to get pointers from you if I go down that path.
Not sure I'm finding the right page in the document. But I don't think the E46 is set up to respond to quires over the can bus. But I'd be willing to test on one of my cars if you give me more detail one what is needed. Worse case is a bridge would have to be used. Collect the broadcasts from the E46 bus on one side. And then respond back to the MS when it asks for the data.
I'm in Germany for awhile longer so can't try anything until after next week. On a side note, I'm planing to go to BMW world in Munich tomorrow.

I would strongly recommend taking a 5 hour road (autobahn) trip north-west from that museum to a magical place called Nurburg. There you will find something that is called Nordschleife. This is going to be unforgettable experience! It's a little pricy, but well worth it. I can even give you recommendation for a place that rents out some fine automobiles

Was good. Honestly I think the Merecedes musem in Stuttgart has a more impressive presentation but..... I like BMW's more so I really enjoyed BMW world and the BMW Musem. And what made it more special is that a local German famliy (2 of then BMW employees) took me through both. Was a great time. Have been thinking of replacing my 4x4 and left thinking I should get a BMW 4x4 or Maybe I should buy a brand new car (I never buy new cars). So I'm guessing their presentations were effective (I didn't feel that way after the merecedes musem).
With that their turbo charged V8 is a wonderful design in my opinion. I hope they sell a LOT of them. It'd be a great engine to swap into things
Yah I looked at going there. I don't doubt it would be a fantastic experience. With the limited time I had it's just a bit far from where I'm at. Munich was far enough (even driving at the max speed of the car of 129MPH in the unlimited sections). Our factory is just south of Stuttgart. I'm also not sure I'd trust myself to drive the Nurburgring. I'd probably over drive the car and then bad things would happen.

I am interested in playing with CAN a little bit and I was thinking to begin with something on my desk before connecting to an actual car.
Do you guys know what kind of a device I can grab in a junk yard (they have E46 in junk yards already) to start cheap? I guess instrument cluster would be one option. I wonder if anything smaller/cheaper then that would also work. For instance, what is the source of the ABS signal? Would that be something I can take off the car and make it produce data on a bench?
Have you seen the video of a mini cooper dash cluster used as a clock? Do you already have it with e46 cluster?
