    Maximum towing capacity

I was wondering how much I can tow with my car, it's an S50 powered Ti with M3 front brakes and 6 cylinder springs. I have already towed around 1300lbs, and I want to know if that's the limit, or if I can tow more weight. The car doesn't struggle at all.

The Euro 318ti owner's manual say a 165 lb. tounge weight and a 1,366 lb. unbraked trailer. Braked trailers are just a tad over 3,000 lbs.

+1 for checking the owners manual. Its amazing what info is in there. If you don't have one then do a google search for e36 owners manual pdf.

What hitch do you have installed on your car currently? I know there was an OEM BMW brand hitch that was available in Europe but it is very communion over here in the US; thus I am assuming you have an aftermarket Curt or DeLan trunk pan mounted hitch. If this is the case you may not be able to accurately or safely follow the BMW specs in regards towing capacity. I know that my aftermarket hitch says max 2500 lbs and I am confident that the real limitation is tongue weight for what ever that is worth.

I could only imagine the wear and tear you are putting on it towing half of the weight if not more than the car weighs.

I have towed with both my M3 and my 318ti. I remember that 1300 wasn't a problem with the car (the ti was slow), but more weight than that definitely had more effect on the feel of the car.
