Thanks for the bump bud, here is my set of flare nut wrenches been pretty happy with them so far, well worth the cost.

These are the Knipex pieces I keep in my tools, I also keep a small plier in the car tool kit I put together. Im getting a custom bag made for it when its done I'll get some pics.

These are the two torque wrenches Ive got, need to get a lower value one as well.

Last week the GF got me this nice new set of wrenches, the rest of my tools are craftsman so Im looking forward to trying these out some.

Actual car updates, I got a few parts in from the dealer so I was able to finish up most of my work on the exhaust side of the engine. New gasket, oring and hardware for the oil return from the head.

    Installed

Got around to installing the S50 tensioner, quite the improvement over the S38 design which has lots of areas to leak from due to the additional oil accumulator.

Removed the coolant pipe from the side of the head to replace the orings on it and clean it up. Removed.

Cleaned with new hardware and orings.

    Installed

    Coolant_tube_install by 93FIM5, on Flickr

    My helper

With those pieces taken care of I installed the headers with new gaskets and hardware.

Got the motor mount cleaned up and new hardware, also chased the mounts.

    Installed

Finished buttoning up the diff and got fluid in from Turner motorsport.

    Ida helping with my photography

Im waiting on a few washers to get the rear subframe put back in and a few gaskets for the drivers side of the engine bay then I should be able to get the suspension wrapped up.

Greg if the washers will take long at all, I have like 20 of everything for the entire rear end.

Wrights are nice. I also have CDI torque wrenches (digital) - they are nice!

Thanks for the offer man they should be here on Tuesday though which should be good enough.

Yea the larger is Snapon which is made by CDI and the smaller is CDI been pretty happy with them. The Wrights look and feel really nice and have a neat grip feature in the open end. I'll try and get a close pic, I suck at pics lol.

Tonight I'm working on the drivers side of the engine cleaning up all the intake pieces.

So clean! Have you cleaned it and painted it while it has been in the car?

The head looks like it just came back from the machine shop. It looks excellent.

That's how clean I try and keep it I like to be able to see leaks before they get bad. The M5 gets lots of preventative maintenance, the only cleaning I've done to the engine was on the sealing surfaces and wiping down the parts I pulled off. No paint yet, when I rebuild the engine next year it'll get hot tanked, painted, etc.

I pulled the plenum yesterday night and even the intake ports look great, very little carbon build up I'll get a pic when I get the throttles off. Hoping today I'll get the throttles pulled and the fuel injectors off. I plan on having the injectors rebuilt at witch hunter performance (unless anyone knows of a better place).
Haven't decided if I'll replace the vacuum lines and crank case vapor separator hoses because they are less than a year old and are still soft. Mainly I just need to replace the oil filter housing gasket, dipstick oring, all the intake gaskets and orings, fuel system hoses and orings, and lastly replace the blower motor because it was on its way out the rest is just opportunity work.

That really is amazing. My engine is not even close to that clean. The pictures you just posted on this page are the kinds of pictures I want to have blown up, framed, and hanging all around the garage with motivational captions.

Knipex has some nice needle nose pliers Id like to get, my problem is that you can never have enough tools especially ones that reach into small areas.

I wanted to say that the Loctite 518 is a pretty impressive system Ive used it at work before but this is the first time on the M5. I used it along with the OEM gasket on the diff and on the spacer plates and couldnt be happier.

A good source for it is McMaster Carr if anyone is curious http://www.mcmaster.com/#loctite-518/=ims96p . I usually go with the master kit as it has primer which makes me feel good.

Got a call from the dealer my washers came in so I should be able to get more of the rear end back up. I also placed another order for the below today should have it Thursday.

Greg what is the factory spec on the spacer plates in regards to sealant? I saw the O ring in there and determined no sealant needed. I did apply some thread sealant to the two or so bolts that are into through-holes. I could pop the plates off and seal them when I put my new axles in if need be, but I don't see how it would leak past the O-ring and I see the only leak point as the bolts into through holes. What are your thoughts?

You're correct the o-ring should be the only thing to seal it up along with the shaft seal, and factory spec doesn't mention sealing them. I did it for the exact reason you mention the through holes, I really didn't want to clean up the under body anytime soon. If you've used the 518 you see its really thin so I didn't see it hurting anything spec wise especially since most of it gets squeezed out and its a thin layer. But thread sealant is another way of doing the same thing, did you Loctite the flange bolts? BTW number 2 was a pain to install, it was the large pair of Knipex pliers to the rescue lol.

    Those little fellas?

They were easy to get off and on for me fortunately. Unfortunately I bought the wrong size the first time around lol.

Yeah I used blue oil tolerant loctite on the flange bolts.

Oh, I know. I am getting a taste of it myself this go 'round. Not on the level you guys are, but just damn.

$1500 brake job when the brakes are just fine? Sure, why not?

Thanks for head's up, they are local to me. Does Knipex make long-reach double-jointed needle or flat-nose pliers? If so, hope Lowes has them.

Yea thats just dealer parts, I also need to order AKG bump spacers, new storage partition from ECS, and sparkplug wires from Turner Motorsport (which Im pissed about because Im so close to going COP that its wasted money really . . . . oh well there will be a slightly used set of wires for sale soon lol).

You'll get there its just a matter of time, its a sickness.

Its pretty clean bud but you know how picky I am, honestly cant wait for bodywork so I clean everything better. Should be fun to put the M5 against the 5.0s I'll bring the GoPro so we can get some video, Nick has to ride with you as a weight penalty against the new 5.0 lmao.

Looks like I may have solved my spark plug wire issue thanks to NikosX. At the very least it buys me some time till after Bimmerfest and then I can make a decision.

Greg there is only one way to fly - 3.8 valve cover and COP's. Do it.

COP's are in the plan with the ECU, so is deleting a lot of the freaking vacuum lines on the S38 and making a vacuum source that is easily accessible for the turbo. I would also like to figure out a decent CCV system so I achieve a good vacuum in the crank case for when its turboed, I really hate clutter in engine bays lol. Plus Ive got a pretty big chunk of aluminum that needs a use . . . . . Whatever I do it has to end up being lighter than the stock setup even if I add features, again having my cake and eating it .

So if you followed my Msystem thread you already know what Im thinking but I thought I would add this here as well. As a side project Im currently toying with what type of covers to run on the M5, I recently traded for some turbines and Im thinking of having the rims and turbines painted flat black while leaving the BMW logo with its original colors. But while the covers are out being refinished and to clean up the look of the rims a little Im going to 3D print off some center caps and use OEM decals. Here is my prototype for fitment, the final version will be printed at a higher resolution, in black, with a domed emblem area, and a set of locating legs, just thought Id share.
