okay, i assume that s52 coupes and roadsters are 98-00
and that s54's are the 01-02 where they get like an extra 75hp or something like that?
correct me if im wrong.
then what are the numbers like e36 and e35 and stuff? like chassis or what?
just wondering cuz some of your terms make your stories hard to follow for us n00bz! lol

E36 = chassis designation for previous generation bimmers (which are E46).
Z3 = E36/7
Coupe = E36/8
There's a thread here about this... is your friend.
You're right about the engines.
1999 Cosmos Black/Dove Grey BMW ///M3 convertible - 5 speed - SOLD
2005 Atlantic Blue Pearl/Taupe Leather Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Wagon - 5 speed - SOLD
2014 Tenorite Grey/Black Mercedes-Benz GLK 250 - bone stock.
2013 Bianco/Rosso Abarth 500c - 5 speed
2016 Oxford White/Grey Ford Transit 250 Powerstroke 148 MR (DIY RV conversion)
I'm sure a search on E36 would yield a lot of useful results, and twenty times as many useless ones.
As hugo stated not so clearly. E46 and E36 are chassis designations for the 3-series. E46 is the newest, E36 is second newest, E30 is ancient.
S52 and S54 are the engines in the M Series cars. You have the years correct 98-00 has S52 and 01+ gets the S54. Non-Ms get the M52 and M54 engines (for the most part), except the 4-bangers.

No, totally different beasts.
S52 = stroked 2.8 (which is why, like it or not, the «S52» doesn't exist, it's the M52B32, because the 2.8 is the M52B28).
S54 = different block, cams, head, pistons, bore, stroke, you name it.

Yes. S50 is what we should have had instead of the S52. Guess BMW determined that NA was ready for a real M motor and gave us the S54 with the newer ///Ms.

Euro S50B30 was 286 hp IIRC, then the S50B32 was 321 hp and then 333 for the S54.

I see that the engines differ a bit from the ones we have in europe?!
Eg.
M Roadster/Coupe (98-00) S52 = Engine from the M3 3,2 96-99 (EVO?) 321 hp.
M Roadster/Coupe (01-03) S54 = Engine from the new M3 (E46) 325hp (The M3 has 343hp but the exhaust is too short in the roadster/coupe which cut downs on the effect)
S50 never entered the market...
Just a thought...
/Manray/
Manray... um, you're a bit off on those ones...
US side:
M50B30 = OBDI e36 3.0L US M3 (95)
M52B32 = OBDII (2) e36 3.2L US M3 (96-99), MZ3 roadster/Coupe 98-00 (commonly referred to as the S52 even though in majority the 3.2 is almost the same as the 2.8 except for being stroked, slightly larger bore and different cams. The rest is identical)
S54B32 = e46 M3 01-present, MZ3 roadster/coupe 01-02
Europe:
S50B30 = e36 3.0L M3
S50B32 = e36 3.2L M3, MZ3 roadster/coupe
S54B32 = same as US
the difference in hp 333 vs 315 on the S54B32 is due to emissions restrictions (cat placement) as well as exhaust design.
Best regards,
T.

VANOS = variable valve timing
double VANOS is intake and exhaust
single VANOS is just the intake...
Honda uses VTEC, Porsche uses Variocam, and other manufacturer's use whatever...
same basic idea... valve timing that is ideal at 2000rpm is not ideal for 7000rpm...
