So I got the car and Im very happy..see thread here:http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1866169
Despite what the majority of posters said, I probably did overpay. Was it worth it? YES! Priceless I tell you....To bring back those memories of lusting after one of these babies since i was 16 years old and watching my 16 yo best friend driving a brand spanking new one.
This was the car that started my love for BMWs. I was driving a 1990 camry. When I finally could afford a BMW, I couldnt afford a E46M at the time so settled for a 46 330ci. One year ago, I finally said no more settling and got the E92M...but something was missing.....the E36 has always had a place in my heart and now shes finally home.
Anyhow, on to my question...
I was going thru the drive thru and as I was slowing manuvering through it, with walls on both sides of the car, I heard a slight whistling sound when the car was idling in N and i would step on the throttle to about 1-2k RPM...Not too high pitched but maybe medium. It wasnt a squeal but very similar.
3k RPM and above is just motor noise. The whistling/squeal was only at very light throttle touch...Is this the intake noise? or belts? Is this normal for this car?
the car drives just fine..PPI said it was ok..Ill be going in for inspection ii in a few days but i just wanted to see if this was normal or not so i can at least point them in the right direction.
Thanks a lot for everyone's input.
did a search and found this really old thread to be pretty similar to what I heard:

(my AC was not on)

Mine whistles, but it's got a supercharger.
I'd bet it's a pulley or tensioner bearing. Not a big problem and easy to identify and fix.
No matter where you go, there you are...
If it's atensioner or idler, replace it sooner rather than later. I had one fail and it cost me a head gasket....
Did the whistles go wooooo?
Is it only in the morning?
^I lost it
you win
I think the whistles are supposed to go wooo wooooo
It could also be a vacuum leak, potentially at the rubber intake elbow

Idle would be pretty garbage though...
mine does the same thing...sounds like a supercharger til about 2k....no idea what it is but nothing is wrong with the motor so I don't worry about it
yea at first i thought it was badass...kept hitting the throttle a bit while bored in the drive thru...then i started thinking...uhh this car isnt S/C ed...so i started wondering if it was normal.
took a harder rev to 3k and sound was gone...car drives fine, pulls hard..wierd
it could be the idler bearings...many people neglect this parts when they do maintenance.
Yeah- using an 8mm allen key, release the tension and remove the belts, then spin the idlers... if they spin freely and whir, they're shot. If they turn easily, but don't spin freely, then they are still good. (The grease creates viscous friction hence they won't spin freely unless the grease is all gone)
The whistle is normal if you have a aftermarket intake. Shortly after putting on an intake, i got a whistle too. Doesn't sound bad in my opinion.
I had a dinan intake that did this. I verified that it was the intake by replacing it with another intake and the noise went away.
Ok so by visually inspecting I saw cracks along the Air inlet duct or air boot attached to the throttle body. There were cracks on every row in the accordion looking thing. Could this be the cause of the whistle?
OP, is it stock or aftermarket intake?
Like many others, I got a whistle @ low rpms after switching from stock air box to an aFe intake. Sometimes I like it and other times it annoys the crap out of me..

I have the same thing. It sounds like im supercharged, but im turbo'd. Its embarassing.
