that is amazing, great write up, amazing build. Where did you get the Euro Radiator Cover? Part Number please?

Very nice.
Your MAF is installed backwards in two of the pictures?

I looked long and hard at that diagram and have considered the Euro alternator duct, however I don't believe it will bolt up to the US alternator since the ducting is on top rather than the side, and it's a brand new alternator so I'd rather not have to replace it with its Euro counterpart. I do believe it should be fine for now, but finding a solution is on my to-do list.
As far as under the manifold goes, that was the original kit from Eric before companies started making silicone molds. The problem with the silicone mold is that they also incorporate the PCV, which I have deleted. I am not aware of any other solution that loops around in the correct way for just the IACV, silicone or not. It doesn't leak, and while it's not pretty, it isn't visible and works just fine. If I ever decided to change it, or if it ever does start to leak, pulling the manifold is now a 20 minute job, so it's not the end of the world.
Part number is 51712252268 for the Euro rad cover
Good eye!! The intake wasn't bolted up in those pictures, just was test fitting the filter with the ZKW's, horns, and fender liner as they weren't installed yet.
I suppose I'm pretty surprised all the stuff you deleted added up to 100 lbs. I'd love to get 100 lbs off the front of the car...
Well if the only thing to critique after all the work I've done is the fact that my new alternator might get a little warm, I guess I didn't do too bad after all.
Is that your bay? Looks good, I like the subtle yet functional mods (Euro reservoir, Euro fan shroud, S54 or Euro? oil filter housing with the oil cooler, etc)
Looks better imo

Wow, that's a damn good looking engine bay. Makes me hate mine
I'm curious, what specialty tools did you use on the entire rebuild? Anything that you didn't already have in your toolbox that you needed to buy specifically for the S52 rebuild?
Awesome photos... I wasted a good 30 minutes this morning admiring the engine porn. I'm living mechanically vicariously through you with this project. No time, no space, no cash to do a project like this for me, but I would love to do something similar down the road and drop into a 318ti. Great work!

looks great!
I've got quite the collection of tools, so there wasn't much that I needed to purchase that I didn't already have. Specialty tools needed that I can think of off the top of my head were my piston ring compressor, torque angle gauge, vanos tools (cam blocks, gear adjuster, flywheel pin, tensioner pin, etc), and a few other measuring tools borrowed from friends such as micrometers and dial bore gauge.
Very nice and clean setup. So how does the car run? Also which Moroso catch can did you go with?
Thanks. This is primarily a track car, so although I like it to look tidy, the functional aspects (e.g. 57mm PWR radiator, dual pickup oil pump/pan) are heavily weighted. Is that your bay? Looks good, I like the subtle yet functional mods (Euro reservoir, Euro fan shroud, S54 or Euro? oil filter housing with the oil cooler, etc)
It's barely visible at the bottom of the pic, but this fan duct provides for proper routing and support of the small diameter plastic coolant pipe that goes from the radiator around to the filler neck on the Euro coolant tank.
I'll say!

cant you just rotate the duct piece on the alternator to face downwards?
Is the duct even necessary? How much electrical load will be on the car since his AC has been deleted.

No, I don't think so.
The AC as such isn't a major electrical power draw. It's everything else that adds up, except on a dedicated track car where you rarely use the headlights, wipers, etc., much less the heated seats or stereo. The aftermarket electric cooling fan probably draws 15-20 amps (I don't know if the original auxiliary electric fan is still in place too).

The car isn't a dedicated track car, but is built for track and auto-x use and doesn't have much drawing off the alternator besides the basics. No amplifiers from the stereo (not even the factory ones) and the stereo is rarely turned on, no heated seats, never driven in the rain unless i'm caught in it so rarely use the wipers, etc etc. I really have no way of telling if BMW put the cooling duct there for those times when all electrical parts were being used at once, or if it needs it for even just regular use, but I'll take my chances.
