we have all been asking.... What rack is this from?
Since you lowered the front subframe and all by 20mm, did you do anything with the rest of the driveline? The tranny , driveshaft angle?
e30 84 340i m6x powered.
e34 89 535i 5speed - current DD
e24 89 635csi - maybe a DD?
e34 93 525i (m50tu) - gone
e39 540i 6spd m-sport - gone
e53 x5 4.4l - gone
e30 89 325i (m20) - gone
He used taller engine mounts to fix driveline positioning from what it seems.
ok ok, the rack is from e39 uk version. don't know how it works yet, but e34 is about the same size + it is lighter then e39, so theoretically it should be ok.
about the lowering, this also concerns only my car in particular, not sure about the v8 but on r6 this is not actually necessary
If I read it right, he used taller engine mounts (by the same amount of drop) to keep the engine in the same place, resulting in only lowering the subframe. Again, if I'm reading it right. My curiosity is, is the subframe lowering needed on all setups, or only for the V12? I'm seeing that the clearance issue was only for the V12, right? Also, in for the test drive info.

yes, you got it correctly, the subframe was lowered but the engine was lifted, the only engine I am not sure yet is the v8, all the sixes DON'T need this.
I am in for a test drive as well, but it won't roll without the electrics, at the moment I am waiting for the guy to come over, so we can get on with it, if all goes well (hopefully, but with that v12 you can never be sure ) then I will probably report about the test drive on saturday morning (European time)
excited!

So if we want to do this to US cars, we will need to source rack&pinions from RHD 6 cylinder E39s.
:sad
that's why I was going to offer it all as a bolt on kit, from bmw actually no other alternatives
i think somone ahd a very valid question earlier, how much throw is on that rack compared to the standard box?
No test drive yet?
no sadly not yet, the e38 electronics don't give in so easily as the electrician expected, but halfway there
Update?

hi there, haven't forgotten about this, i've lost 5 weeks on lazy people willing to get money and doing no work, but the electro gremlin was finally solved using an engine wiring harness of 93 e32 (the third one) and with the corresponding instrument cluster, and it seems very ok,
about the rack it is on, it is tested, the positive news is: that it works, the car has become much sharper on reaction of steering wheel, it all would be fine and the rack set could be bolted on, the wheel alignment was done as well, but the thing I don't like is that when the car lifts up the wheels both turn inwards, this doesn't affect the handling but I don't like this feature, there are thoughts about different tie rods, but the experiment must be continued, I am not willing to offer this thing yet.

This is called bump steer, it is due to improper steering geometry and most certainly does effect handling.
ugh. and to think that i spent money for a brand new box, and all the steering components.
still looking forward to updates. great progress so far!
Update?

Hello from the UK!
This is very impressive to say the least
Do we have a list of parts used?
I understand you have used a RHD rack and inverted it, I am investigating if the reverse will work and a LHD rack can be used on a RHD conversion...
I was going to look into the IX as BMW used a rack but I think it would be too much ball ache to fit as the subframe is totally different.

Thrust for Update... any progress sorting the Tie Rod question?
I have been driving a 2012 VW jetta wagon the past two days and it got me thinking what the 540 would be like with this kind of effortless steering...
