Adding Lubegaurd with filter and fluid change @ 225000 miles. I don't know if there has been a previous change but I doubt it from the mud that came out when I topped it off. Have had some slippage/shudder at highway speeds. Waiting on stealership to tell me if I need valve body rebuild (check ball issue on early 5HP30).

Correspondence with them is as follows.

I am changing the filter and fluid and would like to make sure your products are compatible as well as know which one you recommend to add at this time and in what amount. Vehicle is a 1996 740IL

    Thank You
    Thank you for contacting us!
Lubegard Platinum Universal ATF Protectant is the recommended product for a 1996 740IL. Use one, 10 ounce bottle.
Please let me know if I can do anything else.

I have that lubeguard additive it Definately smoothed my shifts out. Seems to run more optimal when hotter outside since the additive disperses the heat throughout the transmission and helps keep it cooler. About 27k since I first serviced it. Still doing pretty well at 296k.

I can confirm that the FEBI filter is fine on the 5hp30. There were 2 O-rings included. It looks to me like they added the larger diameter O-ring to the kit. The thinner ring was in a plastic bag as the Larger diameter O-ring was placed on the filter. I checked the diameter of the thicker one (one on the filter) and it matched the original I removed. I tossed the thin one. I have no clue why they didn't toss it themselves as it caused some confusion and was not mentioned at all in the docs. I want to thank Shogun for his extensive research into this and the PM's he answered for me. Once again The FEBI is fine and as long as you use the correct diameter O-ring you will not get the whine which in fact is the sound of sucking getting past the smaller o-ring. BTW I used the Maxlife and added Lubegaurd PLATINUM Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Protectant and Permatex Automatic Transmission RTV Gasket Maker on both sides of the included gasket. 2 weeks with no issues and smooth shifts. I will post in this thread if there are any failures.

I communicated with both Lubegaurd and Permatex engineers to assure compatibility during my research before I made my decision on what products to use and combine for the change.

I don't have time to read through everything. Does I have a 97 740i that has a supposed bad tranny. Sometimes reverse and will try to move forward if the car is already moving forward. What are my chances that the tranny is alright, but my torque converter is fried or I have a bad sensor? Also. Could someone let me know all the sockets/tool sizes I need for removal and installation of the 5hp24. Thanks

This is a big job. You need a lift and a stand to do it safely and you need to remove the exhaust. There are several threads in exhaust and trans removal so search those. You can also go to e38.org to search.

So, after hundreds of thousands of miles, do we have the final verdict for Maxlife? Use it or avoid it or at your own risk?

Hello. I have a 1999 750iL. 89,500 mi. I am going to change fluid and filter. Any suggestions as to which brand I should use? I live in Arizona,USA. Temps in summer reach a daily average of 110-115 degrees. At present time my tranny makes a loud "whining" noise when shifting from first to second gear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have one I'll sell you for $100, free shipping. No, the $16 price is about right.

I am a purist and only use either Pentosin ATF1 (direct fluid supplier to ZF) or the Lifegaurd 5 OE fluid. The Valvoline MaxLife seems to work for most everyone without issue so you can use that too, but still its not OE. If you do use MaxLife, you will have to do a complete flush, since the OE oil and MaxLife are completely different blends and it is specifically written on all trans maintenance manuals to NEVER mix different fluids in the trans.

About to do this job, does the Lubegard ATF protectant work for the late model 5hp24 units? I have a 2001 740i.

If so, is it the Lubegard 60902?

    Since this thread was bumped...

I just recently had to drain and flush my transmission again. The Valvoline Maxlife was causing the car to fall out of gear after long drives when hot outside. Got the correct ZF Lifeguard 5 fluid and it has been working great and shifting great again. Skipped the Lubeguard this time. *Knock on wood* it keeps on running!
