Has anybody else timed Sunbelt Stage II cams? When putting the VANOS on and measuring intake cam travel, I'm having a tough time getting under the required 8mm in the instructions from Bimmerworld. There are 19 inner sprockets and I've tried almost all of them and so far the lowest travel I've gotten is 8.7mm.
Is there another trick I'm missing?
I'd ask James of course, but they're closed for the weekend.

Maybe just grab the vanos limiting washer, makes it way easier.

Using the sprocket to limit VANOS movement results in massive thrust surface wear on the intake cam bearing ledge (cam tower). The VANOS unit pushes back on the intake cam hard enough to cause severe wear without the shim or letting it stop naturally. Use the shim, about 4mm thick IIRC.

But it makes less power with the shim, doesn't it?
Why would it result in more wear than than the stock cams?
Edit for clarity: I guess I'm saying I don't understand why the VANOS would push harder on the cam in this case since it's just a matter of finding the right VANOS sprocket to cam and chain sprocket combination. It seems to me that whatever combination works in this case would also be a possible combination if it was just a stock cam installation. What's the difference? If there is one, maybe maybe that's what I'm doing wrong?

Yeah, I know what you mean. And I can't let K get all the wins.

It's hard to explain without showing you how/what happens when the VANOS is limited in the advance slots of the intake cam sprocket versus with a shim. The cam gets pushed back with oil pressure in the VANOS unit, and it causes severe thrust bearing surface wear on the intake cam tower.
Moral of the story: use a limiting shim inside the VANOS unit.
