    Best head unit on E36?

So I'm thinking about replacing my head unit, but I want something that looks OEM/clean and has an aux input. Any suggestions?

Good point. Thanks. Although I'm looking for something that will mate with the E36's interior specifically and look good.

honestly, i hate aftermarket radios, but the stock radio that fits an E36 is crap, I dont care if its the CD43 even, the fact is its old technology and way too expensive. i bought a JVC KDX50BT from crutchfield, and to my surprise, i really love it. it integrates completely via bluetooth, I have an iphone and the music quality for pandora and the ipod is far superior than connecting the aux port. i stream everything via bluetooth and it works great, the best part is it was like $110. you can also match the color to the interior. the only thing i dont like about it is its like a gloss black just like any other aftermarket radio, while the interior is more of a matte black finish. its not as clean looking as stock, but the function is superior in every way. sounds great too

I saw this Pioneer unit a while back and it is no too bad for a modern deck. It also has an amber/red backlight setting based on the photos I have seen. Not bad at all. No CD player but will hook up to just about anything.

I have the OEM cd changer but I don't even use it... Haven't used CD's in forever haha. As long as it has bluetooth or an aux input thats enough for me!

I don't use CDs much... but they do have a benefit... If you're just driving ten mins down the block and don't want to have to deal with pulling out your phone, choosing music, pairing/plugging in etc. it's nice to just play a couple of tracks. That's basically what I do...

    A dirty one.
I have a Pioneer one because iPhone integration was a huge thing for me.
I opted for the color changing one and got it to match perfectly

Would look great... if you want to spend $1200 on a head unit.

I have this alpine from my 540/6. I thought it looked pretty good and you can make the colors a light reddish orange that match the stock interior lights. I am thinking about putting in my M3.

Not really an opinion, there is nothing OEM-looking about that HU. It's even BLUE! LOL

Ah found a couple more pics. Pretty sure I am gonna put it in the e36. The lights look very close to stock and the aux-in/USB are discrete. Plus it has bluetooth.

I had that Alpine in my last car, and I really liked it. Inexpensive, works very well, can control the iPod/iPhone from the HU and had external USB inputs for thumb drives and Apple products.

I wish there were more decks like the Nakamichis that were more teutonic with a matte or satin black finish. I just want something simple, with knobs and matches my interior. I liked my Naks, but they are hard to find.

I'll be putting the CD43 in my car when I have the funds for both that and the BSW speaker kit. There are ways to make that HU iPhone/iPod friendly and it looks like it belongs in the car. I don't mind CDs, either. Beats having cords and wires all over my front seat.

I think other than the BMW OEM cd players, something with a plain flat front with a mostly touch based interface or with flat buttons but *a selectable color display* is key.
