average 174 miles a day for commute drive year round
Great post - Congrats!
What fluids do you use for engine / trans / diff?
use bmw oils of course
standard transmition so you do not addd oil to it

Impressive! year round in Mass double impressive.
I have heard of a few 1.8s in the 300k ranges, but no 400k yet.
Mine is just broken in at 112k, I feel bad I don't have more miles now.

Engine is still strong still has power like the day I bought it new
Nice
Wow, impressive! Once again proof cars are made to be driven !!

Mods: 6psi Supercharger kit; Rogue RSM's; DINAN strut brace; Magnaflow exhaust; Stewart waterpump; Stoneguards, Glove box fix, M Shift knob; Aux input adapter; Mesh bumper grill; Projector Z II headlights (35W Xenon), IE alu radiator, ARD wheel studs, H&R coilovers, Work VS-XX wheels/Hankook V12 tires, VANOS fix
Incorrect. BMW says "lifetime fluid," but that's malarchy. You're transmission will shift much smother and last longer if you change it's oil. I recommend amsoil.Originally Posted by greg in mass

On the hunt for Westvleteren. Have some? PM me.
Curious mind wants to know - how many clutches?
just some food for thought considering your miles... consensus on this forum is that BMW engineers really didn't intend for the trans/diff fluids to never be serviced. There's some good reading in this forum about it... learn the "Search > Advanced" function at the top of the forum.
Here's a thread of fluids many adhere to for trans/diff: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1742533
One specific to 'lifetime'
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...light=lifetime
one cluth at 300 k still had some meet on it

There is a lot of myth, wivetales and outdated information tossed all over the 'net about transmission fluids. I have two things to say. One, MANY cars in the last fifteen years no longer call for a transmission fluid service, but only BMW had the stupidity of sticking "lifetime" labels on things. And two, how many of these vocal forum experts have actually paid the money to have an oil sample analyzed?
Obviously what the OP is doing worked for him.

I think it's more important with an automatic. Manual cars take a lot more abuse. One of my employees has a manual civic with 300k mi on it.

That's great! Greg, there are a few of us on here from Mass that have gotten together for shows and such, shoot me a PM if you're interested in joining us sometime.
Mods: Remus 76mm exhaust, CDV delete, ASA AR1 18in staggered wheels, Turner 12 mm spacers, custom red tails, Kenwood deck/Sirius/BT/USB, ZHP knob, Redline boot, LeatherZ armrest, Amsoil all around, red needles, Akebono Euro brake pads, 34k original miles!
Yeah except for the fact that he puts ~50000 miles a year on the car. Everybody knows highway miles don't put near the wear and tear on a car, especially a transmission. You cant form an argument for not changing the fluid, an oil sample isn't needed. The mere sight of 100k mile fluid alone is enough, metal shavings and all. Or the fact that new transmission fluid makes it shift ten fold better, it speaks for itself.Originally Posted by rf900rkw

Does the 3.0 have the ZF Trans like the older 2.8s and MZ3s?
Funny, I almost added that anyone that judges fluid by it's color is fooling himself, but this isn't really the thread for it.
Real quick... when I was doing seminars on proper transmission diagnosis, I would start by passing around a vial full of some nasty fluid. To a man. (and one or two women), they all agreed that the fluid was "all burned up", the transmission is came out of was toast. In reality, it was brand new Mercon V with a touch of green food coloring added.
I could go on, but this is not the thread for it.
