My vote is driveshaft is not indexed correctly. There are only 2 ways it can go so if it isn't noticeably off then rotate it 180 and reassemble. I'm referring to the indexing of the front and back halves.
    Photobucket sucks!

No, I do not work for Flow... however, one of the GMs owns a '95 Msport that is really nice.... He could most likely drive any new BMW he wants, but he would rather baby his Msport....

I own an outdoor lighting company. I just happened by the dealership one Sunday afternoon and snapped a photo...

Sounds like a good theory, but it wouldn't vibrate when you weren't moving - OP said this happens even when sitting still and revving it.

I like the idea of missing pilot bearing. Sounds plausible.

The pilot bearing is such a small and easy part to forget to install.

OK... Verified pilot bearing and Driveshaft alignment... all good. Talking this though with my mechanic, we have installed rev shift blue poly mounts on the engine, tranny and also used their guibo... so in effect, we have stiffened up the entire driveline. Naturally, any vibration produced by the SMF would be exaggerated because of this. We're going to step backwards; The first step is to remove the Blue poly tranny mounts and put the OEM tranny mounts back in to see if there is an improvement.

I would be seriously surprised if there wasn't an improvement.

^^ This. I think you're on the right track OP. Let us know when this fixes it.

    Problem solved!

It worked! The blue poly mounts were just too hard... We took them out and replaced them with OEM mounts and Halleluiah! the vibration is gone! Didn't even bother with exchanging the engine mounts or Guibo. They seem to be fine. I am so greatful that we didn't have to go back to the flywheel...

Thanks everyone for helping me think though this.

Here is the Guibo and the tranny mounts before replacement. Too bad the tranny mounts had to go... they looked sorta pretty together.

While I was at the shop, I went ahead and installed the rear headrests

    That rear bench looks great!

It is amazing how much of a difference the rear headrests make. It is hard to understand why BMW did not install them from the factory - if nothing else but for safety.

That's two recent instances of "because race car" transmitting more vibration than the owner was willing to tolerate. I am cautiously optimistic that this will also solve my problem.

Cautiously optimistic. Emphasis on the first bit.

It's the Revshift product, looks like.

Just a thought; it is a beautiful part, but does it not effectively take the flex out of the flex disk?

It would. Curious how Tim likes it. I have to replace mine as it's getting real bad now. Not sure whether to go back with stock or give this a try. I know Jon is still using the stock one. I don't know how it hasn't been destroyed yet though..

I got it from RevShift ($129). It is a thing of beauty and is quite stiff. I was beginning to think that it was contributing to the vibration problem, but once I replaced the poly tranny mounts, everything else seems to be fine..... I have only driven it about 15 miles so far, so I will have to follow up after I have a chance to log a few more miles.

I want to know how it is when you get on it and do some quick shifts, downshifts etc. Please let me know as I need to do something soon. My rumble is getting worse and now I get it in 1st when I go WOT and in 2nd if I accelerate around a turn. Just started doing the latter this week.

Looks perfect! It's identical to the first E34 I saw that hooked me. I was in college and it belonged to a Dr. at the school.
