Headliner removal in NON sunroof car.

Does anyone have experience with headliner removal in a non sunroof euro car?
Is it like an E32 with the headliner material bonded (from the factory at least) to a rigid, formed substrate material? It really seems that way.

    Thanks

Most likely is. I think all models were similar. Easiest way to. He k is to pull down the weather strip at the top of a door. This inner weather stripping traps the edge of the headliner.

These cars were done the same way as everything else at the time, though there was a molded panel available. Once you take off the side trim that covers the edge, you should know. Of course, if your headlining has stitching in it like E28s do, I'll bet you have the rods and such. The ETK shows that non-sunroof cars could have had standard cloth/velour headliners as well.

I haven't removed headliner before but i've stripped interiors and looks like it's in there good and would be a chore to remove.

    Thanks Chris.
I'm pretty sure it's bonded to a rigid piece that will come out.
It feels nothing like an e28 headliner and lots like an e34.
I will take it down when I install that L7 interior and dye it black.
No need to replace fabric that's in good shape.

Any luck messing with this. I'm gonna try pulling my headliner to fix the sunroof

Sorry but I haven't messed with it yet.
It's a lot of stuff to remove just to check and see, and I don't see me getting around to dying/installing my L7 interior until later this year.

Bump. Anyone removed headliner before? I'm looking into a new headliner because this gray is just out of place and I don't feel like dyeing black. I spoke to an upholstery guy and he seemed to thing the rear glass needs to come out.

I just did mine about 6 months ago in my 85 745i with sunroof, and it was sewn around the rods and tucked under the windshield gaskets. It was way above my skill level so I paid about $1100.00 to change it at the upholstery shop.

That's what I was afraid of. So the windshield gaskets come out (front and rear?) but not the glass?

They were able to work around the gaskets but they still had to do some sewing to get it back in

One of my E23's is a slicktop, and the headliner is a "velour" style material that appears to be glued to a solid backing material, kind of like stiff cardboard. I will take a closer look at how its attached. It doesn't seem to have the sewn in rods like other BMWs of the era, as my headliner is sagging down in the middle and I can push it back into place with a pop.
