Yeah it's a oriental rug, I was going to throw it away as it got a nasty stain on the one side, but I decided to put it in the garage under the car, so when I work on my car and something leaks etc. I don't have to clean the garage floor.Originally posted by bostongreen18
is that an oriental rug that you do your car work over? heh
if there is a sqeaking sounds when i step out of the car, does that mean the rsm should be replaced, or is that somthing else?
Its probably your emergency brakes causing that sound. Try getting out without setting your brakes and see if it makes that sound. The RSMs will cause a sort of rock tumbler sound and make a clunk when you go over bumps in the road.Originally posted by bostongreen18

Excellent write up man!
Yeah, your handbrake is probably the source of the squaking. Mine does it too, and it's irritating me.
Would this mod be worthwhile if one was gonna get a rear strut tower bar? Or would that be enough, and do the same job as replacing the shock mount?

Btw, thoughts on using the e46 M Vert mounts? Economically that makes sense, I will be doing a CO or a HR Cup Kit later on, but the mounts sounded bad this morning...
They sounded even worse today, prolly because I am paying attention to it now. Just ordered my GCs, hell I only wanna rip through the trunk once...
A fellow South African. Whats up man. Did you consider installing the reinforcement shock mount plates at the time?
So in the 12/14 picture...there is no lower washer??? Like the one in the picture. I was told there was supposed to be one..If you can help me out by checking out my thread "Installed new UUC/Sachs Stage 4 suspension in 92 325i" or something like that in this same section - 3 Series (E36) it would be of MAJOR HELP (if anyone can w/ same knowledge of changing RSM's). I had a new RSM I installed fail the same day. I was told I was missing a lower washer but don't remember seeing one. I've attached pics so you can see what I am talking about. Thanks, and great write up!!
What are the signs of bad RSMs?

Thanks for reading this thread.
Geez.
Oh yeah heres what's been SAID!
"The RSMs will cause a sort of rock tumbler sound and make a clunk when you go over bumps in the road."
Is this "RSM" can be done by anyone? Which RSM did you replace? Did you use the M3 RSM (some threads say they are stronger and better than the E36). What are the torques for the bolts and nuts? Do you need the wheels alignment after the work?
this thread hasnt been touched on in awhile but i think im getting the problems so i think this weekend im gonna chnage out my RSM. i hope its as easy as it looks. I wish someone would say if the e36 M3 mounts are better then the average e36 mounts.
nice , I need to do same

and yes the E46 M3 convertible mounts are stronger than the regular E36 mounts.
The squeaking you hear might be the infamous rear coupe seat squeaking. I just put some weather stripping where the seats meet the body of the car, which is near my rear headrests.
This way the latches or the rear seats don't cause any squeaking at all.
But if its a squeak when you step out of your car, like the others have said, it's the e-brake.
I think I'll take it to the stealer on monday... It's getting anoying, and I don't even have the tools to jack up my carOriginally Posted by zeit00
I don't think I'll do that...Originally Posted by Lawrence1

why remove the wheels??? when u jack the car up ... the rear wheels drop enough to access the shocks and then push them down to take off RSM
