Full Red (code 314) on two tone dark grey/black. Only 88000 miles. It's not mine. It belongs to Dr Stephen Williams in Nebraska. A very nice gentleman whom I got to know last year when I was looking at this car, before I made a final decision to buy my current CSi #27 instead. I've seen its full service and life history. Well maintained. Needs only cosmetic fixes here n there. This is a great collector's/driver's car for any of us in the community. I suggest one of our own buys it and keeps it in the family, instead of a billionaire collector who will put it next to 140 other cars in a bunker in Kuwait (true story).

Ironically, this car passed through my way twice during my search for a Red CSi and both times I passed on it because I was waiting for #27 to become available, which it did. After 7 long years

For them, it's a reasonable price to pay for an exclusive ~225 member club; with total disregard for ROI.
I have no choice but to agree, as that is sound logic, but the Ebay bidders beg to disagree, as the bidding didn't make 25k, which is more than I would have paid. The thing that I don't get, is if I had more money than God, why take the chance that your 26 year old BMW will go into limp mode when the valet is bringing it out front of the restaurant? I would buy a new one.

I was fortunate to find and purchase my 97, I knew what I wanted, and got exactly that. I never buy anything without having an exit strategy, and I figured I could part mine and get most of my money back if necessary. Sorry you sold your 97, but we all know these cars are a roll of the dice. You only lost 2k, most common malfunctions can cost that and more if you are not one to do your own repairs. And even if you so your own repairs, where do you get CSI parts? When I was looking for an 8, I passed on 6 speed cars because if you hurt your transmission, (synchros wear out under normal driving conditions) what then? I have had standard transmissions in most of my toys, and the urge for a power shift still lingers.

It's sad too for me, looking back, because I'm not really afraid to wrench on anything anymore. Today, 8 years and 12 BMWs later, I could have changed out that M73 radiator in a few hours.

Well. He's not very energetic and enthusiastic like many of us here. He's an MD, a little older, close to retirement and just working and minding his own business. He bought this car for his son 5 years ago who in turn, didn't like the car much. So he's put it up for sale. Top dollars or market fluctuations are not on top of his priority list.
The car needs a super enthusiast like many of us here to get back to top notch collector item.

I can understand that. If it doesn't sell, I'd definitely be interested at a lower price. I may even consider a trade for one of my Z1's.

Lovely car! some history behind it...i think it was a model/display/showcase car when born. I think its the only NA car with that exterior/interior combo and one of a handful world-wide. History can be provided by the registry.

That's a pretty good price for a 2-owner, 88k mile Csi with new tires and batteries, etc - provided there are no issues.

    EXCEPT....
Not only has the owner neglected to remove the cosmoline from the intakes and DK's in all this time, he also makes no effort to clean it up now when he is trying to sell it. Alec hinted that he was not really "enthusiastic", which is plainly obvious. This is just one of the more glaring indicators of neglect, and most folk willing to lay down North of $50k for a 20+yr old car are not going to look too favorably on such non-action.
THAT is why it isn't selling....

This is a nice car. Would not be too concerned with the fact the owner did not remove the Cosmoline. Interesting and rare color combination. Only detractor is the driver's seat in my eyes. Seems appropriately priced for the market. I think the real issue is the lack of photos with good lighting and detail.
    What "thumbs up" really means

I don't think having Cosmoline on the engine is a detractor at all. In fact it's just part of the car's originality. I'll take a well maintained car in completely stock, original condition over one that has been torn apart and "upgraded" by owners who think they know better than the original engineers. I say this as a long-time Porsche owner. Just look at the air-cooled 911 market -- it's the unmolested examples in excellent condition that bring all the money nowadays. In the broader collector car market, I've seen original condition cars bring just as much, if not more than the nut-and-bolt restored trailer queens.

Now I understand my comments are more focused on a car's monetary value. I respect the fact that some people aren't happy with "stock" and get the most enjoyment in modifying their rides regardless of how it may impact the value. This is what makes the car hobby great . . . it's got room for everyone.

Have to agree that the presence of Cosmoline is not necessarily an indicator of neglect but rather of an unmolested car in original condition.
My CSi still proudly wears the original coating.

Since when is removing cosmoline, or even just cleaning and detailing the car, considered "modifying" and not maintenance?

You walk up to two identical cars.... one looks brand new, is clean and tidy. The other one looks tired next to it... no signs of pride of ownership, nothing glaringly wrong or broken but obviously not as loved.... tell me again how you don't sense a higher value on the clean car

This is more a point of conjecture as we don't really know the full extent of maintenance done on this car, but it does appear not to have been "loved" to the extent that many of us enthusiasts are inclined to shower on our 8ers.
Food for thought: two identical, brand-new cars sitting in the dealer's showroom in 1994 would both have been sporting the aforementioned protective Cosmoline coating.

My car still has the cosmoline covering the intake manifolds, air filter boxes, and sound suppressor. I agree it makes the engine look dirty. That said, my engine bay is spotless as far as the presence of dirt is concerned, and you could eat off it if you were so inclined. I've tried several of the cosmoline removal techniques recommended on this website (like citrus stripper) with lackluster results. So I just decided to save my energy for other parts of the car and keep the engine bay as clean as possible . . . cosmoline and all. I think my pride of ownership is just as strong as anyone here.

In the end I don't think it's the presence of cosmoline that prevented this CSi from selling. Let's be frank. Most people have no idea what a CSi is compared to a Ci or an i. Sure we here on the forum do, but most of us already own an e31 and aren't serious buyers. IMO the reason this car hasn't sold is the average customer of an 8 series sees a market full of cars priced anywhere from $5K to $30K. A special car like this requires an owner who can make the appropriate sales pitch as to why this car deserves to be sold at nearly double the high point of all the others. From what I've gathered the owner of #18 hasn't shown the interest in devoting that kind of time. Selling unicorn cars (of any marque) requires a lot of time and effort. I know, I've had a few and it can be tedious and exhausting. This car will sell, it just takes time.

The layout of Dr Williams' ad is the reason for buyers " low balling" him (I know for a fact they are) or not taking it all too serious. This car in my opinion is worth north of 60k. It's underpriced at $54K. Had I had this ad in my hand, it would've looked like a car commercial out of paradise. Full extended service history, high gloss and saturated images, video, cleaned and detailed up car, car fax and buildsheet etc... then I promise you he'd sell it for well over $60k. Presentation, packaging and enthusiasm is key here. Why do I say this? Because I know this car VERY WELL. I have all its service records and history and a ton of pictures (more than on the ad). It's a fantastic car. It is being mis-represented. It's like a star football player who is being told to sit on the bench while his full potential is being wasted and the team is losing the game.
Obviously it's up to the owner to present all that in the best light, not me.
Had I not owned my current red CSi, this car would be mine now, since 5 years ago. That's how good it is... but my own is better. Hehehe.

That's really the point I was trying to make.
It isn't a "bad" car, but it is badly presented.

Food for thought: two identical, brand-new cars sitting in the dealer's showroom in 1994 would both have been sporting the aforementioned protective Cosmoline coating.
That's just it, some of us do know this car has an exceptional maintenance history - but nobody would guess that just from viewing the listing.

Exactly! Selling a car like this (a new collectable) requires the seller educate the buyer on why it's worth so much more than the others. This requires effort, much more than throwing an ad on eBay with barely over a line of descriptive text. Some people don't want to be bothered, which is perfectly fine.

Maybe someone on here (Alec?) could approach the good Doctor and offer to market it properly for him, even for a small fee.
He might jump at the chance to make an extra 6k above what he's asking for the car.
On the other hand, if someone offers him $50k and he takes it, there's one lucky buyer who gets himself a bargain-CSi.

    Too many ;-)
The fact that he is using eBay and is unresponsive to questions and serious offers sent through ebay speaks volumes. I believe the good Dr just does not want to deal with the hassle of selling a collector car. He apparently wants someone with deep pockets to simply write him a check or send him a bank transfer and take it off his hands with ZERO effort on his part. The car is special enough that he will eventually sell it using this method, but the courtesy of a reply or counter offer would have been nice.

I take it that you have made him offers and he's not responding?
I gotta be honest. He's old school when it comes to computers.
