You're absolutely right Roger but unfortunately now we have a car with "a story". I for one personally would shy away. This story has to be told everytime the car is up for sale (something the dealership should've disclosed in the ad as well). It could possibly be tough to find a buyer; A special person with no care for originality will be needed to buy this car. If this CSi was a 50-60 year-old car it would be a different story but not when it's barely reaching classic status and the car is in mint condition. Just feels wrong somehow. maybe I'm too anal I don't know...

    1. One family car since new
    2. spent its life between Delaware and Florida
    3. Good News - EXTENSIVE service records since new
    4. The seller understands the negative impact on the price due to the color change, thus what he says (it is a high end used car dealership) is that he has discounted the selling price because of the respray.
    5. The respray is in a BMW color.

I asked him about the quality of the repaint, and he said that it was very good and you can not see the original white anywhere - trunk, under the hood, door sills, etc.

It may be a good opportunity for someone to get a CSi with low miles and full service records. He said he was pretty firm on the price.

A PPI would be highly recommended.

These are not the correct offset for an E31 and a square setup at that.

From my time spent on BaT, it seems you can only get away with a respray color change if it's a vintage Porsche and you did some crazy paint-to-sample color that has a neat story behind it.

On a car like this, the dealer definitely should disclose the original paint color, if not just for good faith. Anyone knows how to do a build sheet from the VIN number these days, so why hide it.

Secondly, the dealer should find out the "story" behind the color change and include that in the description as well.

Looks nice... I really don't like the whole respray thing... Unless it was dealer original quality by an award winner painter or something but chances are low on that one... To me 54 is like 20 too high for god knows what part of the story you aren't being told... Why did they respray it? Wreck that u won't find out about until u really dig ? Who knows... 35 is more what I would pay for that "mysterious background"

At 35 I think they would have a line around the block. The way the price have been climbing on the CSI 54 will soon look like a steal.

Color aside, I think the price is very fair for the mileage and service history. If I were in the market for a CSi and blue color was the driving factor...I would definitely consider it.

Of course, the respray necessitated the removal of the trunk lid "850 CSi" badging, which hasn't been reinstated.
Also, I believe the high-gloss finish in the engine bay is not authentic - they generally have a low-sheen finish in there, don't they?
Interior looks to be in great condition.
The price to me seems reasonable for such a low mileage, immaculate looking CSi.....could be a $65k to $70k car if it still had the original paint.

True about the engine bay... There shouldn't be too many layers, if any, of clear coat there...

Interesting chat on the colour change.

If the car car was white (very rare) and was resprayed in the original colour to a very high standard, would that not be a good thing?

20 years of weather, and general wear and tear on a cars paint can take its toll.

Is it the change of colour colour that is the issue or just the repaint?

To me it's more of the change in color that is an issue.

To me, it's the fact that the car was likely taken apart for proper painting (one hopes)... I think most collectors of low production cars really like to see original paint and original assembly. As soon as I see 're-sprayed' I think of all the trim pieces that had to come out, windows in some cases, body panels removed, potential for over-spray etc... Not to mention the extra attention that is needed on a white to blue color change. I know that there are some Ferrari paint specialty houses out there that charge $60k-$100K for masterful 6-12 month long paint jobs which could actually increase the value of the car in the end. But without more knowledge on this BMW's paint job, it does leave a potential buyer hesitant.

BTW, did we find out exactly what blue it is BTW? Hopefully it's not some non-BMW paint color! My guesses are:

    Orientblau (very likely candidate)
Nachtblau (the 1 of 1 Nicole Kidman/Tom Cruise M73 car)
Lazerblau (used for BMW Individual program)
Sorrentblau (used for BMW Individual program)
Marineblau (Porsche 928 color used for BMW Individual program)

To be honest, the photos are so crappy, that I'm not even sure it's a metallic paint or not! All the colors above are metallics.

I really hate these dealer ads that copy descriptions from car mags. We know what the car was, tell us what kind of shape it's in now and what has been repaired and what hasn't.

EXACTLY... Once a car has been apart it's been apart... Like saying "it is what it is" but that true, it's only not apart / new once... And WHY was it apart?

Yea no kidding... Been searching out a new car these past 4 weeks and I can't tell you how many times that exact statement has gone through my head. I hate it when they list all the standard specs too, page after bloody page....and little or no comments about the car's owner history or maintenance.

"I'm not buying that damn 850CSi unless it has power windows and lighted vanity mirrors; it's a good thing they have those options listed!"

Damn forgot to post this one... Just got the sold notification from ebay... A rare '93 6 speed in Mauritius blue:

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/172414678216

Went for just under $20k, not a bad deal for both parties I think. Dinan exhaust and decently low mileage too.

From December 2016, Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car article "Coupe Troop" The byline is: "Our potted survey of some of the more interesting prestige coupes available for your driving pleasure". 'Wonder how they got the "average" price...not that I'm complaining. I particularly liked the last sentence. All of you with that oversized engine - take note!

    #socaleights

And another winner!!!! In the same issue (December 2016) of Hemming Sports & Exotics Car an article on the HS&EC Car show in Saratoga Spa State Park in August, 2016. This '95 CSi is the "Favorite Modern Exotic" winner. This, in my opinion, trumps (sorry) all the other country specific, or mark specific, exotic winners in the show as the category "Favorite Modern Exotic" pretty much covers all bases. 'Way to go, Charles! There were 16 noted categories and a 1968 BMW 1600 took "Favorite Import". Good day for the Roundel crowd.
