Replacing Transmission Seals and Main Seal. Questions!!

    2001 BMW 740i Sport
    5hp-24 ZF Transmission

Recently my input shaft seal on my transmission started leaking and was planning on getting it replaced. Ive been trying to compile a list of all other seals and gaskets in the area that i could replace while the transmission is out.

here is the list i have so far:

    Input Shaft Seal - 24311422671
    Rear Main Seal - 11141710247
    Transmission Mounts (2) - 22316771130
Main Seal Flange Gasket - 11141736521
    Output Shaft Seal - 24131422667

I already have a new filtran filter with O-ring and oil pan gasket.

Still looking for the right transmission fluid (LT71141) that i want to use. Im leaning towards using the equivalent VW fluid.

As well as changing my differential fluid. Haven't done research to see what weight or brand i need for that yet.

Also wondering if there are other parts i should replace while the transmission was out. Anything preventative maintenance. Im trying to get everything ready before i drop the car off at my indy.

    i appreciate all your help

    thanks

Pull the flywheel and replace the engine rear main seal and also the gasket on the block cover.

    Rear cover(coolant passage) gasket - 11141729836 item 10
Engine rear main seal - 11141710247 item 13

14 is the gasket for the rear seal housing. Might as well change that as well.

So item 10,13 and 14. Item 11 is the bolts for the rear cover.

looking at the diagram the block cover gasket (item 10) is located directly above the main seal?

    Yes

    you need items 10, 13 and 14

It's also a good idea to replace the torque converter with a reman unit. There is a clutch pack inside it for the overdrive and when those clutches wear out, it cause a shuddering due to the overdrive clutch not being able to fully engage. Being as you have a sport model with the higher stall converter, be sure to get the correct one or just have yours rebuilt.

Not sure yet but I just bought an 01 Sport with no reverse and just pulled the transmission today to do a rebuild. The last torque converter I had rebuilt was from a 03 VW Beetle and I sent it to Florida Torque Converter floridatorque.com and the charge was just $205. I am going to call Monday to see what they will do it for.
