Closeout special from Tire Rack: original Star Specs 245/40R17
Sorry bud, but those are DZ101s, not Z1 Star Specs. Still a good tire, but not the holy grail.

Crap... thanks for that. Not sure how I missed that.
I have these tires, aren't bad at all, just aren't star specs.

Already working on returning them. I guess I just saw "Direzza" and thought I was getting a sweet deal on the old model. Oh well, lesson learned.
Probably going to end up ordering the new Star Specs or RS-3s before going to Hyperfest in June.
DZ101s are horrible IMO, they are used in drifting circuits because they get slippy when hot.
I have a set of 255/40/17 Z1s for sale if you are interested. 6/32-7/32 left. I am located in Northern VA but I can arrange delivery from some NOVA NASA guys if you want. PM me.
Rocking woodgrain in the apex's lol
Did some recalculating and I'll need 235mm tires to stay in TTD. It looks like the Rivals aren't made in a 235/40/17 (yet?) and the ZIIs are $194 each. If I look at 235/45/17 then the ZIIs are $169 each, R-S3s are $144, and RE-11A are $158 each. Or I could even go down to 225/45/17 and get the Rival for $149 and gain a point to use elsewhere on the car.
Basically, I have no idea which direction to go. Will I notice the difference between 225 and 235? Are the ZIIs worth the extra $200 for a set? I understand that the 235/40 and 235/45 will affect overall gearing slightly, is one better than the other?
go with the 40 over the 45 series, it will be a gearing advantage.
I would also go with a the Z2's over the RS3's. I was only .2 seconds faster on a brand new sticker set of 255 RS3 vs a roughly 75% tread left set of 245 Z2's. The Z2's felt MUCH better though, and I think if both were the same width it would have been almost identical times. The big advantage with the Z2's over the RS3's IMO is their wet traction. RS3's suck in the wet, the Z2's felt excellent in the two damp sessions I drove them in. Is that worth an additional $200 per set, only you can decide.
Going to try and stay in TTD for a little while although I know the car is best suited for TTC. Rough estimate is a 2:24 on very old Hoosiers in Feb. I'm going to finally hook up my Traqmate next weekend and get some real data at Summit in June. I'd love to make VIR in July but I'm not sure I'll be able to squeeze it in.
I figured out that I can put the stock air intake back on the car which frees up a point to use for tires. That allows me to run 245s which gives a much better selection.
Now my question is BFG Rivals or Dunlop ZIIs? Dunlops are better in the wet but we will do very limited wet driving and have a set of summer tires we can use for that if needed. If we go with the BFGs then we'll be cutting it close for Hyperfest as Tire Rack shows a ship date of 6/7.
I haven't tired either, but I've been happy with the RS3s and found them faster than the og star specs. IMO, it won't make much difference in lap times, so go with the ZIIs so you don't have to sweat the timeline. There are some very fast TTD miatas in NASA MA. I wish they would publish the entrants list for summit and vir.
Great thread. Thanks for sharing. I misssed it but are you running a square set up? 17 x 8.5? Looking for a little more rubber in my d/e car build.
Yeah square set up of 17x8.5 with 245s. I rolled the front fenders a little and we have a spacer up front (15mm?).
We had a pretty good weekend overall for our car. I drove all day Friday and according to the Traqmate I had a best of 1:30.1 and then a 1:30.4 a couple laps later. Dad drove Sat/Sun and got signed off to move up to HPDE-3. My first TT event on Sunday went well and I accomplished my goal of staying on track, being predictable and smooth, and dealing with open passing for the first time. I ended up 5th or 6th out of 7 cars with a best time of 1:31.6. If I could have repeated my Friday times I'm pretty sure I would have been in 3rd.
The new BFG Rivals were pretty good despite playing with pressures all weekend. I think I have a decent idea of where they perform well so I'll test that theory the next time we go out.
I'll have some video up once I get it all sorted out.

this is a nice build guys!!
great build
We finally got a dead pedal to install. We both wished we had it for Hyperfest so I can't wait to install it before the next event.
Thanks to Massive Lee for a quality product!
