Need the procedure for EWS align with INPA

I have a 97 328 vert and I'll be doing a manual/auto tranny swap soon. I want to use the DME out of a 96 328is 5 speed car so I have less issues with the swap. Its the same DME so Im not worried about that part. I have the DME and EWS module and one chip from the key from the 5 speed car so they all match. I want to realign the EWS with MY two keys after I install it so I swapped that chip from the 5 speed car into one of my keys and tried to align it with my car using INPA.

Hope that all makes sense. I will be using the 5speed key and EWS module so I can be sure I can drive it arond after the swap but I really want to be able to realign my two original keys to that new DME when Im done.

I got everything in INPA communicating. It recognizes the existing DME and the existing EWS module. It even reads the coding info off the new chip. I tried using the ACTIVATE button from inside the EWS module display and INPA switched to the ACTIVATE screen but it just sat there. Two little dots in the upper left corner were kind of flashing and it said Working in green on the bottom of the screen.

Did I do it right and just not wait long enough? Did I do it wrong? I waited like 5 minutes and the screen never changed.

Has anyone successfully used INPA to realign an OBDII e36 EWS?

I would love to know what the procedure is and how long it should take.

My current version even saw the different chips in the key. The car starts with the correct chip but it wont align to the new chip.

Just an update: I did more research and found I may only be able to attack this one way. Here's what I have to work with:

    My existing DME
    My Existing EWSII module
2 keys linked to those items

    DME from a 5 speed
EWSII module from the 5 speed
1 key chip from the 5 speed

I was told the chip and key are linked and can't be separated. So i will have to just insert the new DME and link it to my current EWS and keys. I need the procedure for that on my e36.

I can turn off EWS on both of your DMEs, original and spare, so you don't have to worry about key alignment and EWS modules

Try reading the ISN from your ecu, and then writing to your EWS module/
If that doesn't work, get easy DIS v44 working, and head to programming, DME-ews aligning.

Yeah Id rather not go that route. But just in case...whats it cost?

After doing a few MORE hours of research it turns out I need to transfer the ISN from the DME that's going ito the car to the existing EWSII module and I'll be all set. i guess that's what the sync/alighment process does

I'm hoping with all the years of knowledge here that someone can tell me if its possible with INPA and how to do it.

It's possible with DIS in seconds, so if you can get that working, you will be able to sync them.

I appeciate that and I may be giving DIS a try but right now I'd like to see if INPA can do it. I got to the EWS module and got to "Activate". I press F1 like it said to and it get a dialog box asking for some input in this format 0000-FFFF and the default entry is 0x1FF. I'm assuming I need to enter the ISN as a hex code but that's as far as I can get.

INPA should read the ISN number from the DME, but to my knowledge you will need to use DIS to write it to your EWS.

thank you david. The more time I spend using INPA the more I'm thinking the same thing. Ive searched every posible function and test that might have anything to do with this and I just don't see a function for syncing the DME to the EWS. I can indeed get the ISN off the DME.

It looks like I'll have to get DIS up and running. I don't suppose it runs on Win98? I have carsoft and INPA running on an old laptop I got that has a serial port. Its dedicated for stuff like INPA but it will never run WinXP.

INPA can easily syncronize the DDE/DME with the EWS. First get the ISN from the DDE/DME from the coding section of the control board by pressing F3 (atleast by my program). write off the ISN then go to the 'activate' part of the EWS. Press F1 (Writing ISN) and simply type the characters you read off the DDE/DME. Press OK and voila!! the EWS and the DDE/DME are synced

the Keys and EWS units are a fixed link, you cannot add keys to an EWS unit without expensive RFID reading/writing hardware.

The only things you can link are the EWS module(along with any keys that are already linked to it) to your DME.

If you need a new key, the only way is to order them from the dealer with the Vin of the car the EWS module came from. This could be challenging if you don't have proof of ownership of the car that the module is from.

So if my current EWS2 module is bad and I want to replace it with a working used module from another car, I cannot get it aligned with the current keys I have with my car?

I thought that each EWS2 module could have multiple keys aligned to it and I could just add my current keys to the module.

    Hi all,

Am working on a 1996 E36 320i here in Manila, Philippines. We determined that the ECU is bad so we bought a used ecu on eBay - a similar Siemens M41.0 no index, B label. The ECU came with a key so I assumed it would work as long as I transfer the key transponder to my old key which will then match the 'new' ecu. So, we install the new ECU and transfer the new key transponder to the old key. We try to start her but no crank. I tried the wire splicing/jumping at the yellow EWS connector and that at least enabled a crank, but no start.

After this, I figured I needed an EWS DME alignment so I put back the spliced/jumpered wires back to original and tried to do an news align using Progman. This is the guide I used: http://site.ecudoctors.com/tech-data...nt-process.pdf

However, it seems I did not have the exact same steps mentioned in the guide available to me. So, in Progman, I choose Option 2, Software Loading which has an EWS section but no "EWS Calibration" but rather "EWS Adjustment" so I choose that. The sequence for the Wait 25 seconds was also not the same for me. I was advised by Progman to switch the key to the Off position which I did and then I clicked Continue. After I clicked Continue, there's a message saying 'Waiting 25 seconds' so I wait but then Progman continues to proceed with the adjustment as displayed on the screen. But there was no advice to switch to On position. After a while, I get a message that the adjustment failed.

    Any advice?

    Thanks,
    Philip

Thanks Abel. You mean I should put back the 'new' ecu, splice/jump the EWS connector wires again and try to start it with the old key (with old transponder intact)?

Progman is JUNK for this procedure on an e36 unless you are using a yellowhead diagnostic tool.

Now that I've figured out what you mean, I was happily on my way to finally aligning the DME and EWS with PA Soft 1.4. First, I try to do it through the EWS Programming section where there is a button labeled "EWS-DME adaptation". So I press that but it tells me to use the function from DME control module. Always willing to oblige, I do what the computer tells me and proceed to the DME Programming section where I was happy to find another 'EWS-DME adaptation' button. I press that, I get some activity . . . green status bar . . . status bar turns to yellow . . . and i get a "EWS-DME adaptation fail (E = EWS1, DME1, DME2, DME3). All my excitement down the drain

Any thoughts why the adaptation failed? Do I need to Unlock the EWS first before doing the adaptation? There is a button in the EWS Programming section labeled "Erase/Unlock EWS" and another "Lock EWS".

    Help!

If you are trying to do this on the x5 in your profile info then it wont work. It has a newer version of EWS that doesnt allow for re-alignment of mismatched DME's. That feature is only there to reset the rolling code system on an already matched set.

Are you using an ADS interface?

Ive never had much success using anything but DIS for EWS alignment.

    Sorry, what is ADS?
FWIW, I amusing the 20 pin round diagnostic connector as that is what this E36 has.

What version of DIS works for you?
