Question E30 Help need speed output for standalone

    Hi,

I am currently working on a 1991 318is turbo project and need to know where to get a digital pulse output to hook up to my ecu

I tried the brown and red cable on the blue connector of the instrument cluster with no luck and interfering with my speedo and also tried the blue and green which according to a page I found is the output to the cruise control

Both trials where unsuccessful and I still need that digital pulse for my ecu

Anybody know where to get this signal ?

I dont think there is any digital vehicle speed signal on E30(or even E36).

well the differential uses a reluctor style sensor or hall effect.

Some type of wave or digital signal has to come out of it

Reluctor,as the wheel speed sensors. If you need a square wave signal you may use some kind of conditioner to convert the signal.

the sensor is a hall effect

The diff sensor is VR,no matter what someone thinks it is.There is no Hall sensor with 2 wires.

Yep,unfortunately for all of us it is VR.
I still think that cluster has a signal conditioner circuit built in and sends square wave signal to OBC and CC,but never had a time to actually check that.I can use a VSS for my MS3.

I found the solution to my problem :

    http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17773

There is a Digital pulse output in the back of the instrument cluster destined to go to the cruise control

By the way bawareca I saw your track car and saw some of the videos you have posted...Good work!! I enjoyed it all very much

Great, thanks That is no more than 250 whp. With a wrong configured temp correction, ignition timing never exceeded 10 degrees after 5000 rpm,and boost is 5 psi.Good stuff is yet to come

Using the cruise wire actually worked for my install. I put in a stereo with auto sound (adjusts volume based on speed). I hooked the wire for the stereo to this and it works. great find!

I know this was a while ago, but I'm trying to use that same (yellow/blue?) wire out from the speedo as a signal source to a Haltech for speed. Having a tough time with that wire, and thinking about using the brown/red as a signal, with possibly the brown wire to ecu system ground. Anyone have any luck with this? Need a speed input for the ECU so it knows when it's at idle...

I'm in the same boat. Did you figure out what wires these were?

On an E34 (and E36, maybe E30 but I haven't looked at ETM... the differential speed signal goes directly to the gauge cluster and is conditioned out to the ECU. I suspect it's a VR based on pin count but have not scoped it.
