Code Change From 95l Fuel Tank To 85l

I originally posted this under the E38 forum but I suspect this might be a more suitable place for it.

    http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...-85L-Fuel-Tank

I read the IKE from NCS-Expert (codelessen ect.) and confirmed that it is coded as 95l. Changed 95 to 85 and saved as .MAN. Wrote back to IKE (sg_codereen) which was advised as successful.

3 gongs and car reboots. Re-read ike and it is still 95l?

Am i missing something or should this be correct?..

    95_l_literskala
    to 85_l_literskala

    So onto the next alternative...

Tried carsoft and read the HEX:

    According to NCS Dummy:

    95_l_literskala

    00,28,28,8C,50,F0,79,54,B1,D6,00,28,28,8C,50,F0,79 ,54,B9,E0

    85_l_literskala

    00,5A,28,BE,51,22,79,86,9D,D6,00,5A,28,BE,51,22,79 ,86,A5,E0

We can see the 95l on line 12/13

Can I edit the hex and safely write back using carsoft? Or is there some sort of checksum/calculation in there which will need to be calculated after changing the tank size hex?

    Just the usual Expertmode

I have just tried again now using this video as a guide...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcNqHJzkXt0

Same again.. supposedly writes to module. Re-read module and its still 95l

Tried once more turning the car off after a successful write/reboot.

    Same again.

The car is going to have the charcoal canister replaced tonight... I will see how adventitious I feel and try write the hex directly with Carsoft then post the outcome.

I attempted to change the values at hex level via Carsoft tonight.

Read IKE via Carsoft... Made a backup copy. Replaced hex value for fuel tank. Saved and used Carsoft to write back... Carsoft actually takes another backup copy of the module before it writes the changes.

Reboot. Re-read hex and confirmed change was made. The module however had an error... Coding/Checksum incomplete. I know the coding is complete so looks like there is a checksum in there..

It is good to know the carsoft is successfully writing to the module when NCS Expert is not for some reason.

Thinking about it now Carsoft can actually calculate the checksum from the GUI. I will try again and attempt to use carsoft to calculate the checksum itself once I have some time.

NCSExpert profile will not write .MAN files, you need to use a profile like Revtor's. Using Carsoft for coding is like playing Russian roulette with your ECU's.

Ah thank you. That makes sense. I will try with Revtors.

    Thanks All.

I can confirm it has worked as follows.

Read IKE using Expertmode on NCS-Expert.
The trace filesize should be 4kb for the e38 ike.
Open in NCS Dummy. Change From 95 to 85. (For american cars I assume they use Percentage scale rather than litres scale)
Change NCS-Expert to Revtors profile. Write to IKE.
Fuel tank immediately drops by 10L on the gauge and on Test 6.
