Is this a straight forward job? The rear window has two 2 inch cracks in the top right corner.
rear side window, or rear windshield?

...the price of cool ain't cheap!
Rear windshield. I think someone hit it hard with thier fist.
I searched and it's a $1400+++ expense for the insurance company. The concern is that they know what they are doing in terms of rustproofing and allowing the sealant to set for 24 hours And not scratching the paint of course. I guess some company somewhere around here must have fixed another BMW windshield.

Section 51 31/8 should give you an idea what's involved...

Thanks Taylor
Where are you in Canada? The headquarters of a big Chinese glass company is in Toronto somewhere, http://www.xinyiglass.ca/. Everyone who owns an e31 should pick up the phone and pester them to make some more glass for our cars. Forget all the usual kneejerk claptrap about quality issues, or there isn't going to be any e31 glass in the market period.
How come the middle half of any project always takes the most time?
I'm in Winnipeg. Just called the dealer and the glasss is available from Germany in 4-6 weeks. $1166 for the glass so not too bad.

Rumour is not many left at the dealers!
I had a heck of a time getting a front windshield a few years back. There are almost none left

I've been trying for 4 months to get the front glass... koi is right, damn near impossible.. but i did find one in chicago already removed from car. guy told me it had been there for many yrs.. he went to check on it, and it was cracked.. damn! but, just today, I found another one in Wisconsin. 200 bucks, i gotta drive up and get it though.. 4hrs. still happy about it !!
IF anyone else is looking for the front glass here are others i've found
-indoor auto parts, Utica, NY - $299 315 -507- 5440
- auto dismantlers Stockton,CA - $250 1-800 235- 8733
AFAIK front glass is still in the aftermarket as of 2 weeks ago. Local guy got a quote of ~$300 installed.

Check this out: They still have the rear listed in their catalog @$641.95 : http://www.tomkinsonbmwparts.com/par...ODY%20HARDWARE
And windshields for $490.52 : http://www.tomkinsonbmwparts.com/par...agramCallOut=1
I plan to call them as well.

I got curious so I checked out the windshields, and there are 13 in North America, and 111 in Germany available for order. This is for the "green" windshield with the dark strip at the top. There are 3 different part numbers, so maybe your dealer was looking at a less-common one when you ordered. The rear window is a bit rarer, but still quite available.
Yes sir
Thanks for checking it out Olin. I guess I don't have to worry too much about the rear windshield being unavailable. At least for this summer.
My car is not ready to come out of storage just yet. And I don't think I can start the claim without showing someone the car.
I have the rear glass 225$
I too will be getting a new rear glass for the Alpina. Mine has a couple of places that have slight delamination along the edge. Thanks for the posts.
I'm looking for a new rear windshield... Mine has some scratches that are not going to come out. Heck, I'm not sure who's even qualified to install it in my area either, even if I can find one.
I had a new rear windshield fitted a few years back as mine was delaminating. It didn't take the guy long but I had to wait a while for a genuine one to be sent from BMW Germany, they wanted to fit a non genuine one...I said sure as long as you can hook it up to my factory fitted dual tuner radio :-)
Make absolutely sure you get a good tech to install it. So many glass guys do a half assed job. Ask around and find a recommended one. I got a good recommendation from a PDR guy.
What "thumbs up" really means
Did mine prior to selling the car, but your problem is exactly the same as i had. Rust had lifted the glass and a 3-4 cm crack had developed over time in the right upper corner. All in all it came in on
rustjobb + paint 390 USD, glassjobb+rubber 1500 USD. Anyway, the glass is no problem to get hold of.
/freddy
Thanks for comments guys- I'm going to see if I can find anyone confident with cerium oxide sanding, but I've heard that there's danger of shattering the glass, or fixing the scratches but making the glass wavy/ugly. It would be a shame to change out the whole rear glass if the scratches can be reduced to the point where they don't bother me as much.
