Yes, S-3 is used alot. And yes, it sucks gas if you aren't careful. So hammering it on the freeway on-ramps is sweet. Question: Where do I get the Wokke chips? Must have more power!

HA! Sport mode is pretty darn fun to drive with. It's a weekend car so why drive it econ mode? I'll leave it in 3rd when I sometimes play with the exhaust notes.

I'd love to drive in sport mode, if I could start in 1st gear.
I'm not saying you're stupid, I'm saying you have bad luck at thinking.

    Greetings,

I am hoping that someone can clear something up for me about this topic.

I have a 1991 850i with the 4=speed auto and I'd like to know how to get the transmission into "S" mode. My car has a A/M switch. Normally, the binnacle reads E D. If I press the A/M switch, the binnacle reads [blank] D. If I then push the switch again, the binnacle again reads E D. If I then shift from D to 3, the binnacle reads E 3. Should is read S 3? If so, how do I get it to do that?

I'm been having some issues with my transmission over the last few months and have had it completely rebuilt, all of the wiring has been checked and I even replaced the TCC however, the 'rough hiccup' shifting issue remains. My Transmission specialist believes that there is an 'electrical issue' somewhere in the car which is causing the 'rough hiccup' shifts (mostly when accelerating slowly), His next steps are to 'call in the electrician' to start going through all of the wiring to look for a short/bad ground/etc.

Is it possible that the fact that I cannot get my binnacle to show the "S" is an indication that something else is wrong/broken?

Thanks, in advance, for your time.

On the 91 (mine anyways) it is not a slide switch but a momentary rocker switch. You can select A or M only. The last time I tried to use it fell away from its mounts (plastic surgery now underway).

It would appear that you have the NA shifter that doesn't have sport mode. I think sport mode was only on Euro/J-Spec cars.

Is that a newer tranny? I didn't think the 91 US cars had the E.S.M options.

As far as I know ALL US 4 speed automatic 850i cars came equipped with Sport mode. Activated when you drop the car into 3rd gear in Automatic mode. At that time cluster should display S3.
    Correct me if I'm wrong!

Euro and J-spec cars come with a 3 position (E-S-M) transmission switch where domestic North American cars come with a two position (A-M) switch only.On the Euro/J-specs you can have sport mode in D. IIRC, the dash should show SD,S3, S2 and S1 when in those gears in sport mode. When the shifter on an NA car is in 1,2 or 3rd gear dash display will show S1, S2, S3 and ED when in 4th.
I use the auto transmission as a manual when in the twisties, shifting from S2 - S3 when roads permit, Lotsa fun and response.

OK, so why is it that I never see an "S" or and "M" on the dash (in any conditions)?

Slightly off topic but related to the sport mode, my 95 840 has a cold weather package, I have E and a snow flake symbol on the switch next to the shifter. What I am curious about is if I were to get a pair of dinan chips out of a car with sport mode instead of the cold weather traction mode (or whatever the snowflake mode does) how would that play out. So i guess my real question is if the "sport mode" is programmed into the engine or trans chip or something else piggybacking off both?

On your 95 840, putting the gear lever down to 4th gear puts the car in sport mode. An "S" will display in the cluster.

How does this diff feel? I also have 3,91 in stock but i am wondering if it is worth the increased rpm and fuel consumption...

Definitely worth it! It's not that dramatic of an increase in ratio as the stock ratio is 3:64 but the driving experience is definitely enhanced. oh, I also have those wonderful chips from some guy in Germany too.

Thanks for the answer. My stock ratio is 3,15 (euro) so i think it is big difference. Now when driving 100km/h (62miles/h) i have 1800rpm. With 3,91 it would be nearly 1000rpm more!
I'm wondering this because eight will never be quick car so is this just convincing yourself something that really isn't there. For example how much is the 0-62 increased?

It has to and needs to be quick, it should have come from the factory with 400hp min.

It seems that the conversation turned away from the question I posed a few days ago. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have a US Spec 1991 850i that is on its third transmission. Guy I bought the last transmission from said it was from a Japanese car. I get the ED and the S3, S2 and S1 when I select them. Car does not have an A-M Switch because my shift console was gone.

I do not get SD ever?

Wonder what the PN is for the A-M Switch?

I am wondering if a Wokke Trans chip can deal with the J-Spec trans and a US Car?

Does the Wokke Trans ship help with the Overdrive lockup? Mine seems to have it lockup and then not unlock at highway speeds leaving like a big dog on the highway. I have been dropping it back into S3 and that seems to clear it up. It could also be dropping into trans limp mode, my throttle bodies are not the best at low rpm.

Looking for better transmission performance but I understand the limitation of the ZF 4HP24, I can post the Data plate tommorow if it helps
