3 year old batteries flat as a fluke.First off, to day I have changed both batteries,

The dash lights stay on even when the key is pulled and the car is locked, but the fuel tank shows empty.
I am thinking that the GM has caused the dash to stay lit and batteries have gone flat.
any idea's

Im guessing the mileage. It goes off then snaps back on after about 5 seconds...and stays lit after doors closed. lights off, car locked.

NO KEY IN LOCK, ALARM ON, DOORS LOCKED.
UNLOCK/OPEN the car, turn the key, instant start.

Sounds like your ignition switch ore some other module/relay is is keeping the HOT_IN_RUN_OR_START circuit energized.
I'd recommend pulling relays (Like the "Unloader" relays) one at a time..
If you do pull a relay that cuts those things off, it won't necessarily be the cause, but can point you to the appropriate solution.
IIRC the General Module drives Consumer-Cut-Off circuits, things like wipers, interior lights, windows...
Are any of those things still energized after opening the door? Windows? Climate Control? Sunroof?

just took it for a run.
fuel guage stays on empty with light on.
engine temp guage is at 12 oclock even when the key is out.
I have disconected the batteries for now.

I think the fuel level sensors and engine the temp sensor feed the A25 Body electronics module - the EKM
I don't know if the GM factors into any of the dash/cluster system.
Just had a 1991 850 in with a similar problem. Fuel guage showing empty when tank was full. Checked BOTH fuel level sensors - both okay. Took out the instrument cluster and opened the back plate to expose the individual guages. Removed the fuel level gauge and noticed that the contact pins mounted to the backboard that the guage sits on, were slightly corroded. Cleaned the pins, light coat of dielectric grease, reinstall and everything works perfectly now.
Don't know about your "lights on always" issue, but have seen where the cluster backboard starts going crazy. A fellow down in Houston was monkying with the PCB to see if he can replace some of the electronic components, but he was unsuccessful. You may need a new backplate.

just got back from a little drive.
reconected the batteries. same problems as before but engine temp is now at 3 oclock.
removed the key and all stay on
Sounds like either the ignition switch or Alternator going out, There is a plug on the other end of the ignition switch, Unplug it and see if the lights go out. Unplug it from the plug, Much easier for testing.

Either the unloader relay K9 is stuck on - or the ignition switch is faulty. As the battery light is ON when the ignition switch is OFF, this means you are still getting power from Fuse 17 - and that gets power from the unloader relay K9 which is energised by the ignition switch.

I just saw this post and forum. I'm having the same issues with my 03 Cooper S. Dash lights stay on after removing the key. It will go off and come back on. Sometimes stays on until you unhook the battery. I want to locate this unloaded relay (K9) that was mentioned but my fuse box doesn't look like the one in the image attached above. Please help.
These yours? I have them, your relays are cheap in comparison.

This thread is not relevant to the Mini - the cause is different and so are all the component designations. Try Mini2.com

I have a similar issue 2007 630i light cluster between dials stays illuminated even when car is locked. Any help in solving this would be much appreciated. Thanks Paul.
