Could you describe your technique of applying RENZOSIL to your old IM gaskets. Exactly how much do you put on (light, heavy)? Do you smear it with your finger or just leave a thin 2mm bead and let it spread out when you tighten the bolts? I remember reading somewhere that you should wait a bit before tightening the bolts because you want to give the sealant a chance to set up. How long do you wait?

I'm hoping to get a bit more detail than just "apply RENZOSIL." If I ever have to do this job I don't want to do it twice because my RENZOSIL application method was poor. Thanks for your help.

I apply a light to medium amount, smear it with your finger, I wait 5 min before installing manifolds and tighter bolts immediately going from inside out.

Bascially the complete procedure is on my website, see fixes>>>engine general>>>top end overhaul, Excellent write with lots of photos large PDF file Goerge Fontes once send me, 68 pages , overall general cleaning and resealing intake manifolds, safety-wiring oil spray bar banjo bolts, replacing hoses & valve cover gaskets. There are pics how much Hylomar he applied, I do it similar with liquid seal
and here another one by Sean750 http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/V1...ughIdleFix.htm

BTW: just got info from someone, the silicone seal set from Max is now $120/set http://bmw8.us/Silicone%20IM%20Gaskets.JPG

Great info, Question? Is there no need for a healing seal if the gaskets are used?

    Why not getting new gaskets?

    How this method is better?

$600 worth of gaskets vs $7 in RENZOSIL.
Same result. 0 leaks verified with smoke machine, several cars over many years.
Do not use hylomar on there. Does not seal properly at least for me.

Just finished to re-seal my M70 intake gaskets 2 weeks ago with liquid seal (we use here in Japan a liquid seal from Toyota, as that is easiest to get for us). No problem at all with liquid seal, last week we made another Alpina B12 M70 engine the same way with liquid seal + also the timing adjustment as per the info in the DIY section.
No need to get new expensive gaskets, liquid seal works perfect.
For the nuts for the intake I used a magnetic socket insert for the tool, bought a set 10-19mm from U.K. Ebay cheap, incl. shipping abt. $ 15, search for AK27095 Sealey Magnetic Socket Insert Set 10pc Metric

Thanks to the E31 members for detailing the process of removing intake manifolds to reseal gaskets. I am in the process of this job now and its been a great help to have this forum as a resource.

There sure are some worn out parts in my car! I do have a new ignition wire set on hand but it looks like I need to order a couple of crank sensor wires. I dont see how PO owner could even drive this car considering poor condition of fuel and ignition systems.

Do you guys toss out the fuel rail insulation material and run without it?

Can someone point me to directions for replacing the crankshaft sensors? I did a search and looked at some other threads but I still haven't found directions on replacing the leads. Thanks,

JFP30, do be careful and gentle with those connectors coming from the engine wire harness that connect to crankshaft sensors. If there are any kinks/breaks somewhere along those leads, you will experience all sorts intermittent LHM problems.

    Thanks, Chris!

I need to go through harness carefully because I saw some exposed wiring and then i will re-wrap harness with some silicone tape.
I removed manifolds yesterday so I will pull valve covers in the next day or two and look over top end. Car has 120K miles on it so I hope I dont find and worn cam lobes.
I will drill banjo bolts for safety wire. Not sure I want to tackle seals at this time.
I noticed that injectors are mis-matched some with open hole and others with 3-hole nozzles. Wondering if I should buy Bosch replacements 62415 or upgrade to 62429 pieces.

Maybe that will help you, I have on my website a very detailed write up with lots of pics, see fixes>>>engine-general>>>top end overhaul, about 70 pages

no, because it is a noise suppressor http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/V1...Suppressor.jpg
BTW: what is the part number for these 2 noise suppressor parts? Can't find them in the parts catalog, which section?

I don't think those are factory. The only one I "thought" had heat shield material in the fuel rails were the alpinas (I'm very hazy on that one, I could be wrong).

for sure these silvery noise suppressors are factory, even each intake has the 3 brackets for the bolts bolding these under the intakes. http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/en...70/Image12.jpg
Have never seen an M70 (at least on an E32) without these noise suppressors. There are 3 6mm socket bolts on each set

I mean the noise suppressors located underneath each manifold

On my 91, there was nothing on the fuel rails (just did my intake gaskets this spring with the toyota stuff mentioned earlier). I am pretty sure I am the only one that has been in there since I bought the car with 32k on it (and have had it for 17 years).

Thank you, Shogun! I have your instructions saved on my desktop.

I got valve covers off and thank goodness, cams like fine. I don't see any noticeable wear or grooves. Banjo bolts are tight but I will remove and drill them for safety wire.
    IMG_20171023_130653027.jpg

I still haven't decided how I will finish the valve covers. I am tempted to have them powder-coated. Can the stud sleeves be removed from valve covers before they are refinished?

    Method of repairing broken leads

I noticed some broken insulation and exposed wires that were probably shielded also. What method do you suggest for repairing bare spots in wiring? I thought about using small amounts of silicone rubber wrapping, maybe E6000 glue, but I am not sure this will be sufficient. Thanks,

Are the thin seals that Max Lumens sells (mentioned by Shogun in Post #22) really necessary if you go the REINZOSIL only route to seal your IM gaskets? It seems to me these seals would be redundant as several have claimed REINZOSIL alone applied to your original IM gaskets is sufficient to stop any leaks.

Au contraire, mon frere. I've had old intake blocks fail using Reinzosil, Toyota gasket, and Hylomar. The silicone gaskets haven't failed yet. The new ones will be gray instead of orange.
How come the middle half of any project always takes the most time?

Bill, I am sure your gaskets are top notch and will work very well. So far I had very good luck with reinzosil only even with 11.5PSI, but my gaskets only have 50k miles on them...
