Hi Guys
I own a wonderful bride, E39 530i 2000, Manual tranny.
BUT,, I am about to get crazy:
:
Symptoms:
- Excessive oil consumption
- kind of bad acceleration
I did the (plastic freezer baggy) over the warm-engine oil-filler opening as a visual vacuum test..... see the result,

there was a gurgling sound when i pulled out the dipstick, i do not know , is it normal
listen....

what is your votes, should I replace the CCV, or shouldn't I?
and if it is not CCV failure where my oil is going???
THANKS IN ADVANCE

looks to be pulling the correct amount of vacuum. When I bought my 525it with a bad ccv, it was hard to get the oil cap off and it would have sucked that whole bag right in.
I still own an e30, but life has picked up speed and I no longer frequent this forum or own my e39. Thanks for 7 years of help everyone!
Does the oil just disappear or does it blow blue smoke out the tailpipe?

CCV is in 2 parts. An oil separator and the actual CCV part. The hand, or in your case the plastic over the oil filer hole, only checks the CCV diaphragm. If all is OK here you will fell a very slight vacuum, very little change in idle and no strange noises.
The idle will become unstable and maybe a cyclic honking noise will happen if the diaphragm part has failed or there is a leak in one of the connecting hoses.
If the oil separator part, the drain tube back to the dipstick tube or the bottom of the dipstick tube is blocked (Its double walled at the bottom and can block up easily) then the oil which should drain back to the sump has nowhere to go except into the engine.
Hope this helps

Was this ever resolved? I'm having the same issue...excessive oil consumption, no weird noises or smells, car runs & idles fine, no smoke, no leaks, no codes. I plan on replacing the CCV anyway since it's over 10 years old and has over 100K miles (118K).
Thanks

I recently replaced the CVV and all hoses, etc. on my son's 1999 528iT. It had about 100k on it and was working fine. As I replaced it, the hoses crumbled like dust. I took apart the oil separator part and the diaphragm was also very brittle so the whole thing was definitely on its last legs.
The M52's and M52TU's do not usually have the same oil burning problems as the M54s. This is an extremely interesting thread:

Installation of this catch can (which is of very high quality) will not cost you very much more than a new CVV and have helped many with their oil burning problems. I installed one (heavily modified) in my VF supercharged 528 because the kit removed the vacuum source from the CVV making the CVV inop. I modified the can so it would fit under the intake in the same place the CVV went. It has been working fine for about 9 months without any problems.
Much modified VF Supercharger Kit tuned by Tuning Tech FS, M5 front sports seats, CVV to catch can conversion, Boost Gauge, Schmiedmann header to rear muffler high flow exhaust, Header Ceramic coated inside & out, Exhaust heat wrapped from flanges after header to before CATs, Kicker sub with dedicated 200 watt amp, CCFL angel eyes, CF facelift kidney grills, Quaife LS diff ,Super duty cooling kit, Electric fan controlled by temperature adjustable 2 speed controller (JimLev design)

My excessive oil consumption turned out to be the leaking OFH gasket.

Hey guys, I didn't want to create another thread so I'm just bumping this one. I'm contemplating replacing the oil separator in the CCV system. My commute to work is about 15-20 minutes but the engine does get to full operating temp (96 KTEMP) but it basically gets there just a few minutes (3-4 min) before I arrive to work. I've noticed under the oil filler cap there is that yellow snot that dries up into a dark sludge on the cap and i'm thinking the valve itself has either failed or was defective when I replaced the entire CCV system not that long ago. I'm only going to replace one of the connecting hoses and that's just because its a PITA to detach from the nipple connection, the one that runs up above the intake manifold. I literally spent 2 hours trying to unhook it when I was messing around with the pieces.
Anyways, what do you guys think? I've done the job before so it should be relatively simple. My understanding is that if the separator has not failed, there shouldn't be any yellow under the cap if the car has fully warmed up, correct?
(It's been about 6,000 miles since I replaced the system)

Not interested in a catch can. But thanks.
