Since I bought "Herman" a 2003 330ci w/automatic trans, I've had Transmission Problems, I've had him repaired several times by competent Technician. Transmission was rebuilt but twice the main seal has blown and replaced under warranty; This problem keeps reoccurring. Also living in LA I'm often stuck in heavy freeway traffic and transmission (GEAR COG) light comes on and the next morning when I start the car, no light back to normal.
I suspect the problem lies with the transmission oil cooling system, but I haven't found much info on diagnosing the Trans oil cooling system or what would some of the symptoms be when that system fails.
Can someone please comment or share info on transmission oil cooling system on automatic E46 w/M54 engine?
Thank you advance...
The transmission fluid cooler is at the expansion tank on the driver’s side of the radiator.

Modern transmissions require specific fluid levels. The transmission in your car is no exception. Your transmission, made by the Germany company ZF, requires a specific fluid and a specific fluid fill procedure. I suggest you find a reputable shop that specializes in bimmers. Try www.bimrs.org.
Will any other auto transmission fit in my 2001 325i? I have the G.m. type in it now but blown up....I was told the 01-03 z3 transmission with fit with no mods added....is this true?
The”new” transmission needs to be another GM, and not a ZF unit. I don’t know which transmission case in the Z3, but if it’s a GM it should fit without issue.
