540i Clutch compatibility

Hey Guys,

In the middle of converting my 540iA to a 6 speed down here in Melbourne, Australia.

As only 70 or so manual E34 V8s (called the "LE" here) were shipped to Australia, it is impossible to get any local parts so I've been getting most of my parts from USA.

I've secured a Getrag S6S420G from a fellow member here (Thanks Nick!) and I need a Flywheel/Clutch.

From what I've read, E34 & E39 FW/Clutches can be used on the M60 so my questions are twofold.

Is it correct that E39 (540i & M5) Flywheels and Clutches can indeed be used on an E34?

And if so;

UUC OE-size V8 Flywheel and Clutch kit (moderate weight) - E39 540i with Performance Organic clutch $1599

or

Turner Motorsports E39 M5 JB Racing Aluminum Flywheel/Sachs 850CSi 280mm Clutch Package $1980

Bearing in mind, my car has the ESS supercharger on it and the Aussie $ is pretty strong ATM ($1.07US) and I'm happy to spend up to $2K, which of these would people suggest is the better option?

e34 v8 6speeds use a 265mm clutch with a bigger spline for the clutch disc to slip onto. the e39 6 speeds use the small spline so the r39 clutch will not work on an e34 6-speed box. The flywheel will work if the disc mating surface is the same dia.

I did some further investigating and the E39 M5 JBR/850 clutch will fit, I should of said that the 6 speed is an E39 but I didn't think it made any difference as they are essentially the same...

The 240mm clutch is too weak. The 280mm clutch is perfect other than the high cost of the clutch and flywheel. Keep in mind you will also need to modify the slave cylinder unless the kit comes with one. The M60 and M62 have identical flywheel and clutch fitment.

Tulok, you're the first I've ever heard state any difference between the E34 and E39 420G gearboxes other than the crank sensor mount. Can you cite your source?

I missed this the first time it was posted, but as Moroza said, this is not right based on all currently available information we have. If you know this to be true, please provide proof. Until that happens, common knowledge is that the 6 speed transmissions from both the E34 and E39 540's are exactly the same for fitment concerns.

Since I missed the thread when it was new, I dodn't get to put my $.02 in, but you ended up with what I was gonna recommend, so I guess it didn't matter. But good choice!!

For someone who doesnt have any mods (and doesnt plan to) but does take the car to the track on a regular basis, would an upgraded, aftermarket 240mm unit still be undersized? I like doing things right on my car and I suspect it's going to need a flywheel when I do the clutch, but I cant really swing $1600+ on one of these setups right now.

Also does anyone know the spine specs (diameter and count) on the E34 6 speed trans? I figure if I'm going to go through someplace like Miller for what's basically a 1 off flywheel, might as well take a look around at other options that could be made to work.

mostly road course duty. There's a group up here in MI called 3ballsracing that rents out tracks in the area about once a month. So far I've spent 2 days on track at Gingerman and part of a day on track at Mid-Ohio (shreaded the drivers side motor mount in the middle of the day which caused a radiator failure and had to end the day early). I know I gotta pay to play (and I've played a good bit so far) but to spend a ton on a clutch right now means not being able to do any more events for most of the summer. Clutch engagement has been in the top 2" of the stroke since I got the car, and I'm just starting to notice a little bit of slip here and there, so I figure I have a little while, but not long to figure out my solution.

So I might have found the spline size back tracing through rockauto's site. Can anyone confirm if it is indeed a 1 3/8" x 10 tooth spline?

I started to look at clutch options recently some I'm glad this got revived. I was looking at the ttv 240mm until with an m5 but now I'm seeing that it's been rated as "too weak" I'm worried that my "clutch kick'n tire spinnin'" ass will destroy it in no time...
Is a full size option still the best cost to performance solution? I'd rather not step up to a 280mm of of an 8er

A couple of years ago i installed a TTV 265mm lwfw with the standard 540 clutch. It was the least expensive "perfomance" option at the time. I've been happy with it. There is some clutch chatter at idle but performance has been great. Keep and eye on the exchange rate with the British pound to make the TTV flywheel an even better option.

So you have the M60 fw and m62 clutch? Does the clutch ride in a groove then like brake pades that wear a lip?

Here's the s62 clutch in the ttv 15lb flywheel. This is currently in my '95 540i; pretty great.

I have the s62 clutch and jb racing lightweight flywheel in my e32 740i/6. It feels perfect, you will get a little flywheel chatter at idle but the throttle response is so much better.
