    E46 blower won't switch off

Hi I'm new on here and was wondering if anyone could help.

Basically my 2001 e46 tourings heater blower will not turn off even with the ignition off it just stays on and flattens the battery I have now pulled out the 40amp fuse ( number 50) and its stopped.

Any ideas on what is wrong would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Clive

When you step out of the vehicle and close the door, do the lights dim and go off?

Your blower resistor has failed. Replace it and it will work properly.

Replaced it today all working now was a nightmare to get to one of the screws but it's all done. Next new discs and pads all round

Resurrecting an old post. Consensus all over the interwebs is that if your E46 blower stays on, replace the FSR.

My blower suddenly came on and stayed on, and shortly thereafter the FSR began smoking. Fortunately it blew the blower fuse, so avoided a fire.

Replaced FSR, FSR connector, and blower motor - all OEM from the dealer. Replaced fuse and the blower came on full again, no key in ignition. So replacing the FSR has not solved the problem.

Is there another reason the blower would stay on continuously?

    Hi,

I'd say to report/post this in the E46 section, it's nothing to do with car audio and associated electronics. You'll likely find more owners on that sub forum who've experienced something like this too. I suspect when the smoking of components happened, some wires have fused together, so check continuity of each wire.

    Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks - resurrected old post from a search, didn't realize it was in the electronics section.

Does it run with the FSR unplugged?

Why did BMW use the FSR instead of pulse width modulation (PWM) to run the blower?

How is that relevant to the OP’s current situation?

So here is how it works: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...-motor/dOYoVuw

It goes from the fuse to the FSR, which sends the power to the blower motor. From there the ground side of the blower, goes back to the FSR, and the other piece is the HVAC control module. Next would be to look at the HVAC control module, for it seems that needs to be tested.
