It is possible to get it all wrong, beware!
One of the lads had this on his Blade (bike), meaning "see you lads". It has other connotations, which he became, let’s say, more than fully aware of.

For info:
A lot of people in the UK tend to be shy with their plates due to "cloning". I don't think this is an issue in the states?
In the UK you need four things to be able to drive. A valid licence, MOT test, valid insurance, and road tax.
All this data is held on computer and the police can check within seconds if any requirement is missing, most patrol cars have automatic number plate recognition cameras, so they don't even need to check.
An unscrupulous person could have plates made with your number on them, and assuming you are legal, they will be able to drive round without being flagged up.
You know this has happened when you get 30 parking tickets and a couple of speed camera fines, for somewhere you have never visited.
Just don't pick this one:

I have a slight dilemma. In Saudi Arabia a few years back (14 i guess), they decided to switch from just 7 numbers to have 3 numbers and 3 letters (just like the states at some point), this created a problem as all Arabic words have a root of 3 letters which meant that I alot of people had actual words (some bad) on their plates.
You would think that when they switched to the next generation plates only 5 years ago, they would have sorted this out, but instead just added the Arabic numerals (in addition to the Hindi which is commonplace here now) and the English letters so its a dual language plate.
Mine unfortunately has 'ا م ك' which transliterated means "Yo' mama" which is kinda embarrassing given the conservative society that Saudi is.

I used to have EIGHT50 but I couldn't NOT get this one when it became available (and I can't believe nobody else tried to "snipe" it). So this is my new 8 plate, the car is in storage so I can't get a pic with it on for a while. It doesn't mean anything (the official "what does this signify" was "Automatic, the car model is 850CiA" but I plan on telling people that it stands for A-hole. I'm guessing I'll get little argument
I'm insane, I have 4 cars and now 3 of them have single-letter plates. Ego much?

so i'm assuming you guys can just think up a licence plate and if no one else has it, you can just get it made up??? and put it on your car? if not, please explain how it works over there. i for one would be interested.
Most states will allow just about any combination of numbers and/or letters. If your request is not already taken by someone else, then you will get that number. In Texas, for example, it will tell you online, right away if that plate is avaiable, plus here you can actually pick various background images on which to have your "plate number" printed on.
Check it out here: www.myplates.com
Go to "create a plate" and see how it works.
My White one has: BMW E31
My black one has: 850 CI
other plates here in Texas that are mounted on 8-series are:
V12
E31 TT
the only drawback is that these plates cost considerably more than standard randow number issued plates...

MD is ~$50/yr for Vanity plates + Registration (Another $50/yr IIRC), but the Historic registration is cheaper, and exempts me from the one-time safety inspection and annual emissions test. These cars are pretty vain though.
I ordered BMW CCA Capital Chapter plates for my $500 E34 beater though
i agree X5X. some of those plates would be worth 10's of thousands over here.
In Nevada, it is $20/year for personalized plates and an additional $10/year for a specialty plate background like the Las Vegas one that I have. Check out this link https://dmvapp.nv.gov/dmv/vr/plateav/plateav_input.aspx
For those of you interested you can also order a souvenir plate for $15 http://www.dmvnv.com/platessample.htm
