What to use ? Where to get under hood insulation replacement?

It is time to remove and replace the deteriorated insulation foam on the under side of my hood. The car is a 1988 M6. What should I use to replace it and where can I get it as I am trying to get the car ready for Sharkfest.

If you don't stay original, go on Ebay there is a guy there that makes a beautiful set of vinyl pads, with or with out logo, for about $100. I think Fernando bought a pair and might be able to point you to the website.

I used 1/2 inch on mine. It is used in aircraft, and it is cleanable.

1+ on Ebay guy. I needed this for my E3. He was nice enough to offer if I sent him a template which I did. He made one up that fit perfectly, charged me about 75$ including shipping. Very happy with it as an insulator and cleanable, oil resistent etc.

That looks pretty nice, what did you use for adhesive and how long have you had it on?

    BTW, thanks for the link.

Be forewarned: The worst part of this job is getting off all of the old adhesive. There have been writeups on this and you'll find one if you do a search. Basically, cover the engine compartment with a large blanket and go to work with 3M Adhesive Remover, Goof-Off, or whatever else works for you. Use some type of plastic scraper which won't scratch the paint. Use gloves. Be sure to have plenty of ventilation. It's a very messy job and takes hours to do it right.

Getting ALL of the old adhesive off (down to the paint) will help ensure the new insulation will stick well. I used the OEM replacements; they come with an adhesive backing so no messy glue is necessary and should be much easier than the factory-applied originals to remove, if ever necessary.

You might also want to replace the stickers on the underside of the hood; repros are available (PM me if you're interested; I purchased a few extras when I did mine).

    3m #80 spray adhesive

I used 3m #80 spray adhesive, as suggested. I got it at Grainger, and it was a hassel, it is considered a hazardous material. If you ship by UPS, Fed Ex, It must travel by truck only, not by air. And there may be a very high shipping cost.

I picked mine up at my local Grainger store. Call first! You will need the 24 0z.

    http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/3M-...A20?Pid=search

You will need to mask off all of the areas not to be sprayed. It is a contact type adhesive, coat the underside of the hood and the back of the insulation/liner.

Make some index marks with tape on both the hood and the liner, so when you adhear the liner it will be on straight. A second person is a real help when attaching.

You do not have to completely remove all of the old adhesive, just the high spots.

If you do a search on the forums, there are some excellent pictorial posts on the subject.

Thanks Jay, I assumed it was a 3M product as we used a lot of their adhesives when my wife was doing upholstery. Just needed to know which one held up well under the hood.

+1 on Classic9 . That's the product I got and ordered mine w/ the red logo. It's been on for 3+ years and still looks new. They recommend a 3M adhesive, do not try anything else, it will not work. Don't ask.
