I'm changing the oil in my e60 since I finally have time to do it myself instead of taking it to the dealer. The dealer put in 5w30 last time I had it changed. Over on the MN bmw forum, I was asking opinions on whether I should go 0w40 or 5w30. One of the members said, and i quote, "NEVER put a 30-wt in a BMW mill". Seems odd....pretty sure the manual recommends 5w30 for this e60 v8 engine, and i've seen it recommended plenty of times before on other boards, along with Mobil 1 0w40 euro formula. His explanation was that "30-wt is OKAY at best when under 50 degrees fahrenheit. Any temp higher, and 40-wt is optimal." I'll most likely be putting in 0w40, as its still a bit cold here and hte 0w will get flowing a bit quicker, but I was curious as to what all of you put in your e60 v8 engines....5w30? 0w40? 5w40? 0w30?

Mobil1 0W-40 European Formula.
I agree!!! works well and shop around for the best price. since my wifes car is out of the warrenty I have been changing it every 7500 miles instead of the 15K IMHO. If you get the WIX filters they are made in Germany and include all the o-rings you will need.
Good Luck wro87
Castrol ( as it is clearly labeled on the oil cover) 5w-30 as the manual states. Of course I change my oil almost every 5k and at that interval it does not matter what oil I use really. Higher viscosity for you winter people though!
not sure why that posted 3x
I will be doing my first oil change possibly this weekend so I decided to do a little research.

I also checked out the BMW site as suggested in the Manual:

BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil is recommended for scheduled engine oil changes.

My dilemma: I'm a long time Mobil 1 user... but the stupid cap says Castrol...

I've used Valvoline SynPower SAE 5w-30 and Mobil1 SAE 0w-40. Any one on list should be fine. Castrol makes BMW Oil, hence the Castrol on the Cap. I wouldn't sweat it too much. What is more important is the change interval. I would NOT go 15k between changes. I usually run about 7-8K between changes.
BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil @ 7500 mi. with Mann filter.
Whatever oil the BMW dealer sees fit to put in
currently my family's e61 had its service from the dealer, where I assume BMW synthetic 5w-30 was used.
When the next service is due (5,000 miles or so), i will be using Lubro Moly Synthetic 5w-40 oil.
I have used this oil on all the european vehicles in our family (4).
Not to start an oil debate... but Mobil1 is notorious for causing engine noise (rattle).
I'm sure its a great oil, but lots of people have noticed a lot more quietness when they used different oil brands.

Funny thing is that I went to Budds BMW (Canada) and they sell their oil for $9 each and then they had a bundle promo which brought the filter down to $20 (reg price $35).
So I told the Parts guys that I was really surprised to see a deal at the dealer!!
Mobil 1 5W-30 with BMW OEM filter @ 7k
mobile one synthetic 5/30 never fails!
Valvoline Synpower Xtreme MST C3 5w-30, (its the dog's goolies!) Its also BMW LL04 Approved. (BMW 525d-Lci-2008-6 Sp. Manual)
With a Mann, Mahle or Genuine BMW Oil filter. Change every 7000 to 8000 miles.
..Cant go wrong.

I would not use Mobil 1. I used Mobil 1 0W-40 in my ML350 and it gunked up entire engine. It turns into sluge, since then I am using Castrol 0W-40 in ML350 and 535xi (E60) it is great. I have never seen it breaking down in engine. I would definitely stay away from Mobil 1 at my cost of entire new engine.
BMW 5W30. With my 20% off parts at BMW with the BMW Car Club discount it's cheaper than Mobile 1.
Oem bmw since I got the car and I was super impressed with how clean everything was when the valve cover was off after 160,000 miles.
