now my small E39 didn't like this replacement !
see what my wife got on a way back ...
Decided to fix permanently my CCV system also in this car
CCV is off after 2H , peace of cake when you did it 4 times already
Will install new CCV, add more vacuum into crankcase using small vacuum hose and my personal oil catch method
tested all this on my second E39 , so far so good , pictures to follow
( alex thread )
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...-CCV-Retro-fit
Old CCV after only 3 years
Well no more adding oil between oil change
1000 miles and counting ... how cool i will make this design to look better when i have time

Triple Job - pan gasket , new steering Rack, 25MM M2 sway bar
Finally put my hands on this dirty and time consuming job
Pan gasket was leaking when i got the car , now when i fixed my oil consuming its time to fix pan gasket , install better sway bar and new steering rack
Took me 2 evenings to unbolt all , gasket is ready for replacement
safety first , double stands under every wheels
Working from the top :
Install harbor freight engine support bar
remove engine mounts nuts
Bentley said remove dipstick ( looks like to safe o-ring gasket ) so i just released it
Remove air filter and release dipstick 13mm nut , pull dipstick out
release steering column 12mm bolt
Working on the ground
Unbolt all arms, unbolt sway bar, unbolt steering rack , drain steering rack ATF, unbolt steering rack oil lines , etc, etc .. boring ...
Basically I removed entire sub-frame to have an easy access to my triple job, steering rack , pan gasket and new sway bar
drop subframe using floor jack , you will need to shake it a bit or release engine support to push it down
Finally after 2-3 attempts ...
Enjoy easy access to pan gasket as well as to steering rack and sway bar
BEFORE
AFTER
Now with a full access to this gasket its a peace of cake to replace it

Nice job!
check real OEM there are M1 24 MM and M2 25 MM
and finally nasty peace is out
nothing unusual i can see , some small plastic peaces which i know was my old valve cover gasket
no metal which is good
I know my oil was due , a bit oil sludge, I need to change it more often than 8k miles
+ Gasket was leaking for sure you can see burned oil down
How cool .. now i need some beer and rest

no more style 66 wheels?
No Money, No Honey
ok, so you might want to google some more. many folks are taking preventative measures by replacing that nut entirely, for example tack welding it, or using a lock-nut, or with some loctite , or adding a clovis pin like mechanism to secure it so it will never come off. remember, if you are checking it, it is reverse threaded.

here's some reading material for you:

the last one might suggest an alternative BMW nut for you....
figure you can do your own research and decide for yourself. that nut coming off has catastrophic outcomes, so now's the time to do something about it; if nothing else, for peace of mind.
BTW, very nice DIY write-up... i haven't seen many of the oil pan DIYs, and love the use of the HFT engine support and double stands.
Is the oil pump nut really an issue even on the m54 engines? I thought this was more of a problem found in the old engines.
well, consider reading that E46 ZHP thread i posted above. it appears that even BMW have changed the design of the oil pump nut from the M54 to the M54/ZHP ... which to me is almost an admission that they acknowledged the problem and updated the design. also, don't know what you mean by "old engines".... but this has been a reported problem since M52 days... which are all part of the same family of M52TU, M54, S52, etc....
style 66 is my favorite winter

I see what you said , appreciate you help
My nut is kind of bronze color, not black so i assume i have a new design nut aka ZHP ?
I will not mess up with it but will add some threadlocker into this nut thread if i already there

You missed a spot on my oil pan sir!
I'm interested to know what the steering feels like with the new rack & pinion.
I spent 6 month trying to convince myself that 2010 BMW 550i M Sport is better than my E39 530i , no luck
These Old school cars feel and drive 100 times better than any new shit BMW makes these days
Faster ? yes
Better ? hell NOOOO
2010 is sold 2003 is still in my garage , we will make it even better now
LOL just bolted subframe , all is left to pre-load all bushings , lube engine and steering rack
yfff a lot of work for my back

fixed
and finally new ZF steering reservoir with cutted old pipes for a new steering rack
drove car today , need to do alignment ...
with a new steering rack car feels so sweet ... not that my old steering rack was bad or leak
but i always wanted to get this feeling of a new car ... first impression was way ... this steering is rock solid
new steering rack and a new 25 MM sway bar did the job , - road feeling is much less now and this steering "tremble"
from a bad road is gone ... nice nice , if you ever wanted to get this "new car feeling" of your E39 get ZF rebuild steering rack , no complains
and ya i used Mobile 1 synthetic ATF oil for steering
For sale ( check my signature )
Front Sport sway bar with bushings 24 MM , 83k miles - $100
Steering Rack 83k miles ,- $300
Harbor Freight engine support bar ,- $50

looking good!
make sure to use nice quality stainless hose clamps for those power steering hoses.... the factory ones come loose after a few years. also, take off the o-ring from the cap and measure the size and order a replacement o-ring made of Viton. whatever ZF or BMW uses is junk and goes into compression set failure in about 12 months. Viton o-rings will last much longer... I replace this on every car people bring to me and I rarely see dirty P/S reservoirs again. the o-rings I get from amazon.
